Convincing Alexandra and Cosmin of my photographic initiative to shoot their wedding on an iPhone wasn’t too difficult because they are friends of mine and friendship is the reason why I photographed their wedding. They liked the idea and gave me the trust I needed. Besides the fact that I convinced them, the novelty of this challenge was to transpose the story of the wedding day in images.
The entire wedding was a great photo challenge due to the absence of professional photo gear, while the reception was difficult to shoot because the available light was extremely low and the phone doesn’t perform quite well in such conditions (1/15 exposures). When the light goes up a bit the exposures reach 1/20. There were quite a few moments when I wished I had my DSLRs but, all in all, it was an interesting challenge because I had to creatively fill (I hope I succeeded) for the lack of equipment.
It was an experiment, the grooms had a contracted photographer – I hope I didn’t bother him much. I know I’m not the first wedding photographer who tries to photograph an entire wedding with a mobile phone, I do not wish to encourage photographers to do this unless they want to discover something new (same goes for the grooms) and I do not believe that professional phone photography will become a mass phenomenon. The photos were edited to a minimum and rendered black and white because it’s difficult to sync some low info jpgs, but they can be printed to a decent size.
In august I’ll shoot my first contracted phone wedding. The contract mentions that the wedding will be photographed using a phone but also that there will be a second shooter, for backup.
The wedding is a major event for each couple, the wedding photographs are unique and very important and such an approach is not easy and can get risky. If you find couples with enough openness towards such an idea…it’s fantastic.
