Often overlooked in favour of larger UK cities, Newcastle upon Tyne is one of the country’s most characterful and architecturally rich locations for an urban wedding. Compact yet cosmopolitan, it combines striking historic landmarks with industrial heritage and elegant Art Deco interiors, all within walking distance of the River Tyne.
For couples seeking a city wedding with personality, Newcastle offers exceptional variety. From grand civic architecture to atmospheric medieval spaces, here are some of my favourite places to photograph weddings in the city.
Newcastle Civic Centre
While the ceremony room itself is understated, the building is a masterpiece of mid-century modernist architecture. The sweeping, red-carpeted staircase and iconic seahorse chandelier create a dramatic setting for portraits, while the soft, diffused light at the top of the stairs is remarkably flattering.
Following the ceremony, couples have complete freedom to celebrate anywhere in the city – from intimate restaurants to vibrant riverside bars — making it ideal for those who want flexibility and energy in equal measure.
Wylam Brewery
Originally built for the 1929 North East Coast Exhibition, this industrial landmark is one of Newcastle’s most impressive wedding spaces. Soaring ceilings, exposed brick, and vast arched windows create a bold yet elegant backdrop.
The venue regularly hosts internationally renowned musicians, yet for weddings it becomes an exclusive, atmospheric space with exceptional coordination and an outstanding in-house bar. It’s a dream for couples wanting a contemporary celebration with edge and personality.
The Vermont Hotel
For timeless glamour, the Art Deco ballroom at The Vermont is hard to rival. Its symmetry, period detailing and classic proportions lend themselves beautifully to both ceremonies and receptions.
The rooftop bar offers panoramic views across the city skyline which is ideal for sunset portraits, and its central location makes it perfect for couples wanting an elegant city wedding with everything on the doorstep.
Newcastle Castle
Dating back to the 12th century and built on the site of a Roman fortification along Hadrian's Wall, Newcastle Castle offers one of the most historic ceremony settings in the North of England.
From rooftop views across the River Tyne to candlelit medieval chambers within the Keep, it provides atmosphere in abundance particularly for couples drawn to history and romance.
What unites all of these venues is their access to a city whose streets are consistently recognised for their architectural beauty. Newcastle’s sweeping bridges, cobbled lanes and dramatic perspectives have even provided the backdrop for major film productions, including scenes from Transformers: The Last Knight.
For couples seeking a wedding location that feels both distinctive and visually rich, whether modern, vintage, industrial or historic, Newcastle upon Tyne offers an extraordinary canvas.
