If having great photography is one of your biggest wedding day priorities, we’re going to let you in a little secret. When it comes to making great photos, wedding photographers need two things: location and light.
Location: It’s true that a good photographer can make even a boring location look great. By using creative angles, lighting techniques, and careful lens selection, they can amaze you with their photographic eye. However, on a wedding day, you want your photos to be beautiful, and the location that your ceremony or portraits are in makes a big difference in the outcome of your photos. If you’re getting married in a non-traditional venue then consider adding a focal point such as an arch, or pillars to draw the eye to the nuptial spot. If you’re getting married outside, consider the views from the guest’s viewpoint as well as the areas that the photographer would be able to move around in without disturbing people to get different angles. There are many variables that photographers take into consideration when they are taking photos including using elements of the location in the foreground or background that you might not have even thought of, so don’t be afraid to ask their opinions on the location.
Light: If you’ve been dreaming of sunset photos in a field on your wedding day, let your photographer know before the wedding day. Photographers LOVE good light, and in a perfect scenario, all photos would be done in the golden hours right before a sunset. However, mother nature doesn’t always play nice on wedding days, so what if your sunset ends up behind a cloud bank, or what if it rains? Trained photographers know that they must have a plan B, so they bring their own light. It might be strobes/flashes, or it could be LED panels. With these tools in their arsenal, they can suggest other ideas for interesting and unique photos on your wedding day. If you’re lucky enough to be able to choose your outdoor ceremony time, ask your photographer when the best light is to get the best results for photos. If you are getting married indoors or in the winter months, ask your potential photographer to show you some work that they have done where they could not go outdoors for photos so you can see the range of their lighting talents.
