1. How did you get your start and why you chose to do wedding photography?

I started wedding photography like most people, shooting a family member’s wedding for free. I got a buzz out of the pressure involved which really drove me to become better.

2. How has your extensive experience in wedding photography helped you in difficult circumstances on a wedding day?

Weddings can sometimes be tricky events to manage. I shoot all of my weddings alone and so I’ve learned to rely on help from the Best Man and Groomsman. The most difficult time for me is the formal images, trying to get everyone together can be difficult and so that’s why I always ask the Best Man, or close family member for some help. This allows me to get through the formal images quickly and efficiently.

3. Tell us about some of the more unique weddings you’ve shot.

I have shot weddings all over the UK, the largest being a 500 guest Asian wedding and the smallest being just 2 people who hired a whole castle for the day. Both were amazing, but different experiences.

4. What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

I often get asked why my potential clients should choose me to be their photographer. It’s a tricky question, but I always judge myself on my latest wedding. I am very critical of my images and always strive to take a better image, and I think that comes across when I talk to my brides. Consistency is a key factor in choosing your photographer, but so is flair. Some of my favourite photographers , both wedding and non-wedding, take images that I have to look at twice to understand where or how they achieved the shot. So consistency is good, but so is a few unusual, “different” shots.

5. What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

I love to photograph weddings where the Bride and Groom have complete faith in what I do, and give me free reign to document their special day through my eyes. From my favourite part of the day, the Bridal Prep, through to the first dance, being able to express yourself as a photographer for someone on the biggest day of their life is a true honour.

6. What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

For me to capture images that reflect my couple I need to get close to them. I interact personally with as many people as I can at a wedding, it’s key for me that the Bride and Groom and their guests feel completely comfortable in my company. If they are wary of the photographer then he/she will never get images that truly reflect those people.

7. Do clients ask you to travel for Destination Wedding? How to do you handle shooting a wedding at a venue you’ve never seen before?

Traveling for weddings is not so much an issue for us in the UK, as most wedding destinations are reachable by car or a short plane trip. Of course I do a lot of wedding photography in London and around the UK so I’m familiar with all of the popular venues. However, the venue, whilst important, should not be a deal breaker if the photographer has not shot there before. Experienced professional wedding photographers should be able to shoot a wedding at a venue they have not seen before. In fact for me its a real joy to shoot weddings at a place that I have not seen before. I find it keeps the adrenalin pumping and makes me look for shots, as opposed to having a pre-defined list of shots and places in my head.

Wedding are great events to be part of, it’s hard work and whilst we are only visible for the day there is a lot of work that goes on in the background, in the studio and office.

I’m proud to be part of an organization such as the ISPWP that is striving to highlight great photography and great photographers.
