A truly multi-cultural wedding.
Khalil is of Indian descent but his family has lived in East Africa for four generations. He lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) until he was 11, but his family had to evacuate after the civil unrest in 1991. They moved to Montreal for 5 years then finally settled back in Uganda. He is an Ismaili Muslim.
Jessica is of Canadian (Newfie!) and Chinese heritage, but her father was born and raised in India. She grew up in the Greater Toronto Area. She is Catholic.
The couple met at Queen’s university through a mutal friend in the spring of 2001. By September of that year, they were dating. Following graduation, Khalil moved back to Uganda to join the family business, and Jessica stayed on in Kingston to do her Bachelor of Education. After completing this, Jessica moved to Uganda to teach. They have been living here since then.
Their event combined all of the typical Ismaili wedding traditions including the Friday evening Piti/Mendhi party. The ceremony also combined both heritages. And then at the reception, the couple followed Ismaili tradition of the family blessings of the couple as they are presented to their friends as family as married.
