This was a beautiful Long Island wedding! The wedding took place in the gorgeous La Dolce Vita – Leonard’s in Great Neck, New York. The month of the wedding happened to be a beautiful blooming month of April. The place gave us a lot of photo opportunities, but we had little time, since everyone was in a rush.

The couple was beautiful, the atmosphere that they created around them was so comfortable. At the wedding, it was very fun, the bride kept on dancing with all of her guests, creating a very joyful atmosphere.

Real Wedding Description
There is no doubt that this bride cannot be beaten in relation to her expressiveness. Mari has a different facial expression for every new second!

Photographing every detail was exciting for me: the bride’s friendship with her sister during the wedding preparations, the anxiety and the jitters, the fear of being late, the love for soccer and Twitter (she watched a soccer game and surfed the internet during her preparations), the addiction to McDonald’s french fries, the passion for shoes and pink nail polish, and principally, the love between her and Muca.

How about the party? It was THE party! I left saying that after this wedding it is going to be hard to think that somebody else sings well! I think that at the party there was the greatest concentration of good singers per square meter in the city. What amazing voices! Muca is a drummer, he has a band and plays for some other singers as well, this is why the music at the party was impeccable. Different bands and friends of the groom took turns playing and singing. And of course, he also played the drums a little bit!

The guests’ enjoyment of the party was wonderful to see. But even more wonderful to see was the love and affection that everybody had for the bride and groom. What a loved couple!

Uncle Bob vs. A Professional Wedding Photographer

We like Uncle Bob. We really do. He’s a great guy and everyone loves being around him. He tells great jokes and can even do a few magic tricks at parties. He’s the guy we all look forward to seeing at Thanksgiving.

Uncle Bob rocks.

But what do you say if he offers to photograph your wedding?

It sounds pretty good. He has a really expensive camera, and he says that he won’t even charge you. It will be his wedding present!

Awesome. It sounds too good to be true! And it’s totally understandable to consider it. After all, who wouldn’t like to shave a few thousand dollars off their wedding budget?

However…

The problem with this scenario is that many clients have the same expectations of Uncle Bob as they do with the professional images they see in the wedding magazines. After all, anybody can be a photographer, right? And if that’s true, why not save the money and put it towards something else?

It’s true that anyone can press a shutter, but it’s a wholly different thing to have them deliver professional quality images at a wedding. Wedding photographer is considered by many to be one of the most difficult, challenging, and high-pressure photography jobs. You have to be master of multiple photography disciplines, and you have no luxury of a re-shoot if things don’t turn out.

So what are the REAL differences between Uncle Bob and a professional? Why should you have much lower expectations from hiring Uncle Bob? What advantages does a professional have?

We decided to outline, in a lighthearted way, the differences between what to expect from Uncle Bob vs. a professional wedding photographer:

PHOTOGRAPHY EXPERIENCE

Uncle Bob:

Takes wonderful pictures of flowers and his kids at the playground.

Brings his camera on vacation.

Took a community college photography workshop about 5 years ago.

Favorite camera setting is “Auto.”

Enjoys discussing the comparative merits of various cameras on internet message boards.

Doesn’t see the need to spend $450 for an external flash because his camera has a pop-up flash.

Professional:

Averages 3,000 to 10,000 images every week.

Knows how to shoot in all situations: dark caves, sunny beaches, large churches, in the rain, and in the snow.

Can quickly adjust camera settings blindfolded.

Adept at using ambient light, bounced flash, fill flash, and off-camera lighting.

Understands the principles of photojournalism, portrait photography, creative posing, and composition.

Is up to date on modern wedding photography styles and techniques.

Enters wedding photography contests.

Belongs to professional wedding organizations.

Lives, breathes, and sleeps wedding photography.

WEDDING EXPERIENCE

Uncle Bob:

Has attended a few family weddings.

Loves dancing to “We Are Family.”

Tends to takes snapshots only of friends and family that he knows.

If the wedding pictures don’t turn out, oh well.

Professional:

Shoots 30 to 50 (or more) weddings per year.

Can show you multiple examples of wedding galleries from past clients.

Has enough experience to help your whole wedding day run smoothly.

Has dealt with a myriad of wedding scenarios including churches, backyards, castles, ballrooms, beaches, and parks.

Has shot small weddings, large weddings, traditional, modern, unconventional, offbeat, and everything in between.

Knows the flow of a wedding day and can anticipate where to be, what to capture, and can adjust to the unexpected.

Can provide valuable advice on your timetable and recommend family group shots.

Realizes future livelihood relies on delivering high quality images.

EQUIPMENT

Uncle Bob:

Oftentimes will have a new top of the line pro camera, but hasn’t fully explored (or understood) all of its features.

Has one or two consumer grade zoom lenses.

Might have a flash, but always uses it pointed straight ahead, set to Auto of course.

Has shot a couple of hundred images with it.

Professional:

Has invested $10′s of thousands of dollars in multiple pro camera bodies, an extensive collections of lenses, flashes, battery packs and other peripheral equipment.

Has shot hundreds of thousands of images and knows the equipment inside and out.

Refreshes all equipment on an ongoing basis. Has all equipment cleaned, adjusted, and calibrated on an annual basis.

BACKUP EQUIPMENT

Uncle Bob:

Cell phone camera.

Could borrow a point-and-shoot from another guest in a pinch.

Professional:

Carries at LEAST one complete pro-level backup kit (camera/lenses/flash) in case of equipment failure.

Most pros carry triple or more redundant systems because you just never know what could happen.

POST PRODUCTION

Uncle Bob:

Uploads the images to his Flickr account.

Some of them are crooked or not exposed properly.

Burns the images to a CD.

Professional:

Has invested thousands of dollars in high end computers and image editing software.

Through years of experience has mastered the end-to-end workflow including capturing, downloading, culling, editing, uploading, burning, printing and album creation.

Attended workshops on perfecting the image, removing blemishes, adjusting exposure, enhancing colors and contrast, and final presentation.

Dedicated to creating heirloom quality images for your family to enjoy for generations.

INSURANCE

Uncle Bob:

Umm…

Professional:

Carries the proper business insurance including liability insurance.

Some venues will not allow your photographer to shoot without a Certificate of Insurance. Even if they will, should a guest trip over a piece of the photographer’s equipment, without proper liability insurance you could be financially responsible.

CONTRACT

Uncle Bob:

Contract?

Professional:

Provides a contract which outlines all relevant facts on the services and products provided, and at what cost to the client.

A good contract will help to reduce any misunderstandings between what the client thinks is included (8 hours, prints, album, etc.), and what the photographer promises to provide.

PRINTS AND ALBUMS

Uncle Bob:

Gets his prints from Costco or Walmart.

Unlikely to provide an album.

If he does, his selection is limited because most high quality album produces only work with professional photographers.

Professional:

Has access to the highest quality professional photo labs. These labs have professionally calibrated machines and use higher quality, thicker paper for their prints. They also offer more options for print finishes and surfaces.

Works with high-end album manufacturers who only sell to professional photographers.

How long has the photographer been in business? Experience is really important on the day of the wedding. Knowing how to deal with difficult situations is a real plus for you.

There are NO re-dos in wedding photography. None. Despite the percieved ease of digital photography, there is no margin for error when shooting a wedding. You have to anticipate moments over and over in uncontrolled lighting situations. You cannot recreate moments after the fact. You have to be alert and react and know your gear inside and out. Uncle Bob? He’s a nice guy with a good camera, but he’s not a professional photographer. Anyone can buy the most expensive cookware available, that doesn’t make them a Top Chef.

Real Wedding Description

The Great Synagogue of Florence or Tempio Maggiore is considered, rightly, one of the most beautiful in Europe. In August it was the site of a beautiful Jewish wedding with a beautiful couple from England. Everything went according to the tradition, the groom had not seen his bride for a full week before the ceremony. For outdoor photos the photographer, Edoardo Agresti, brought the couple above the Piazzale Michelangelo, with one of the most breathtaking views of Florence. The reception was held in the beautiful surroundings of Castello di Vincigliata above Fiesole. Traditional music entertained the guests who danced from dinner up to first light of the morning.

For today’s ISPWP member spotlight, we feature New Zealand wedding photographers Binh Trinh and Lin Zhao who own TZ Studios. They are currently the only New Zealand based photographers who have been accepted into the ISPWP.

Bio:

Welcome to the exclusive TZ-Studios, a new boutique photography studio that specializes in high end and fine art wedding, portrait and nudes photography.

TZ-Studios was formed by the husband and wife team of Binh Trinh and Lin Zhao, both of whom are international award winning photographers. We have clients all over the world, including New Zealand, Australia, America and even Barbados. And now, we are so excited to introduce our services to Dalian and China.

We are a super duper happily in love team of husband and wife, Binh and Lin. Now that we are married, we do feel more emotionally attached to each wedding job as we have a greater understanding of the exciting, anxiety, and of course the love on the day.

How did you get your start and why did you chose wedding photography as a career?

After I finished my PhD in 2006, I accidentally stumbled across photography as my brother’s desperately needed someone to take photos of their wedding three weeks out from the big day. After a crazy two days full of ceremonies and 6500 images, I quickly discovered my hidden talent. I have pursued wedding photography ever since and cannot be happier with my life. I consider myself to be a happy person and wedding photography just allows me to simply be myself. I love joking around with my clients and sharing a great day with them. A wedding is just too long not to have fun.

How has your extensive experience in wedding photography helped you in difficult circumstances on a wedding day?

The biggest thing I have learned from the last 4 years is to remain calm, confident and in control as everyone looks to me in difficult circumstances. I guess I am just lucky to be a Leo with built in natural charm and leadership, not to mention the desire to smile.

Tell us about some of the more unique weddings you’ve shot.

The Barbados wedding is certainly up there. I flew into China about one week before having to fly to Barbados via New York. The long trip was exhausting. Thankfully I gave myself plenty of time to recover from the severe jet lag. The different culture and scenery were a big shock. In addition, the clients were Nigerian and thus added an extra dimension to the job. Overall, it was an eye opening experience and certainly one that I cannot wait to repeat.

What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

Please, please, find someone you can get along with and share a few laughs with on the day. When you look back at your images, you want to have the precious memories to go with them. The rest will fall into place.

What’s your favorite part of the wedding day to photograph?

For me, I love capturing those small but significant moments that make each wedding unique, from a bored page boy, to a nervous groomsmen, to crazy stunts by the groomsmen.

What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

Size definitely does not matter. For me, I just love happy and relaxing weddings. Its always about the experience, from the day of the proposal, right up to the last minute of the evening, its all about the experience. Things will go wrong, people will be late.

What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

Relax, and just let all things go and allow yourself a chance to enjoy your big day. Feel the love for each other and freely express your emotions. This is why it’s so important to choose a photographer you can feel comfortable with.

How important is it to hire an experienced wedding photographer?

This is certainly an easy question to answer. An experienced photographer is more than just about where and how to take pictures, but also how to handle and deal with everyone at the wedding to ensure the clients have the best time possible. The beautiful images just go without saying.

What do you find is the biggest challenge in wedding photography?

There will always something that will go wrong on any wedding day. The toughest job is to calm the clients to allow them to relax and enjoy the day. I always believe that if I can catch the natural smile of my clients, they will always be happy. Thus, my job is to make them happy, no matter what happen.

Do you do “destination weddings?” If so, what are your favorite destinations?

I have been lucky to have done a few destination weddings, from China, to Australia to Barbados. So far, Barbados has certainly been my favorite location. How many people can say they have been to one of the world top 10 beaches?

What do you do for fun when you’re not shooting weddings?

Practice photography, of course. I will never stop learning and evolving.

How would you describe your style of photography?

This is probably the hardest question to answer. I love capturing my client’s personality, priceless moments, and create beautiful art work during the portrait sessions for my clients to cherish and show off to their family and friends. Lets just say, my style.

What do you offer to clients that is unique? What is your Unique Selling Proposition?

Simply my contagious laugh. It may not be the prettiest laughter in the world, but its enough to make everyone relax and enjoy the day. Its always weird to hear my laughter in the video along with my clients and their friends and families. I guess I should also mention my award winning images and albums as well, and my vision as an artist.

Do you offer albums? If so, describe the albums you offer and why you think it’s important to provide albums.

For me, album is about telling a story. Album is a piece of art, not just a book to stick pictures in. My albums have won awards in New Zealand as well as in the USA. I only believe it offering art work and high end quality work to my clients so that they feel proud to show off their memories.

How would you describe the current state of the wedding photography industry, and where do you think wedding photography is headed in the years to come?

Wedding photography is slowly being turned into a commodity market, where only the price matters. It is therefore important for serious photographers to separate themselves from the pack, and to show potential clients that their services are more than just pressing buttons. I believe that there will be more ordinary photographers saturating the market. At the same, I think this will make it easier for high end artists to differentiate themselves from the pack and allow discerning clients to make easier choices.

What (or who) inspires you?

I find inspirations from people who appreciate life, from the little moments, to the grandest of dreams. Life is too short to take it for granted, and yet so many of us do. I always try to live life to its fullest and I want my photography to capture everything I love about life, from intimate moments to crazy laughter.

What’s the best photography-related advice you’ve been given?

“You make a living by what you take, but you make a life by what you give” – Winston Churchill.

I heard this quote at a business networking event and it really helped me to realize that photography is a privilege, a gift that has been given to me, to allow me to share with others. By giving my photography service to charity, I will always continue grow as a person and as an artist.

What would you say was the biggest reason for your success?

Firstly is that I want to be friends with all of my clients. I want to be a part of the big day, not just as another vendor. I love getting hugs and have wonderful conversations with strangers at weddings.

Secondly, I always try to be better every day. I enter in lots of competitions, and have been lucky to have won so many awards. However, I always want to try something new, push my skills and more importantly, my vision. After all, I am an artist.

What future plans do you have for your business for the next year?

I will aim to increase my international reputation as an artist and wedding photographer and travel the world and share my passions with clients to share my visions. Did I mention I love meeting new people and making friends all over the world?

What is the biggest challenge facing wedding photographers today?

With the affordability of cameras, the market is over saturated with over ambitious amateurs who need and want quick cash jobs. The clients will be confused with the vast range of prices and quality. With the downturn in the economy, prices will play a significant part and the quality of wedding photography will no doubt suffer. Potential clients may also turn to their families and friends for help with photography and thus further contribute to the false expectations of future brides in regards to prices and quality.

Photographers must continue to push themselves to be master of their skills in terms of photography and business. I believe the high end photographers will be better than before as wedding photography continues to evolve, while low end photography will continue to get worse.

Real Wedding Description

This was a beautiful wedding with Jennie and Drew Foy in Dallas, PA. The couple are actually from the Philadelphia area which is where I photographed their engagement session. The ceremony was a traditional catholic ceremony in Shavertown PA. Following the ceremony we went to a private farm residence where we had their photo session.

We then finished the night at The Highlands at Newberry Estates in Dallas, PA. This is a venue that I photograph several times a year and is always a great time!

Real Wedding Description

It was a cloudy day in a historical place right on Santo Antonio’s beach, Florianopolis. The church is Azorean architecture, simple and beautiful.

For a few friends and family it was an emotional ceremony and reception. Good speeches and a lot of emotion.

I felt chill down my spine to be the only one who was capturing the scenes that day. All the coverage was shot without any flashes, using only available light.

At the reception in the parish hall beside church, the guests enjoyed cake and champagne. The music was the duo Merlot playing acoustic guitar and bass, with songs from the 80′s and 90′s .

The wedding was held at one of the most beautiful Panama venues: the old ruins at Patronato Panama Viejo. The guests came from all over the world since the bride and groom has lived in many countries around the globe. The atmosphere was very classy with a touch of mystery (old ruins) the weather was perfect , it was a fantastic wedding destination.
