For Sarah, the allure of taking pictures comes from discovering an approach that yields beautiful, well-balanced images. “At a wedding, I try to find great natural light, and go for dramatic and somewhat sweet portraits with highly saturated color,” Sarah explains. “I let people be who they are, but I’m also getting what looks best on film.” For example, one exceptional photo in her portfolio shows a sleek bride and her black-clad bridesmaids standing in an uneven row, the sun-drenched L.A. cityscape filling up the background; none of them are demure—instead they look sophisticated, confident, and ready for anything. In another impressive and more traditional image, Sarah trains her camera on a bride’s face, the close-up capturing her loveliness—red lips, ebony hair, and pale skin—along with her palpable excitement.
The level of excellence achieved in Sarah’s prints is most likely a result of her formal training and education in her field. She began studying photography as an undergraduate, and continued at the prestigious Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. And before dedicating herself full-time to weddings, Sarah worked for years in the commercial fashion world, where she became adept at lighting and finding interesting angles. Because of this, her pics have a freshness that’s often missing in wedding photography.
“Sometimes I think most wedding images start to look the same, but Sarah’s work has an original thread running through it that makes it stand out,” says a makeup artist who has worked with Sarah. “She simply thinks outside the box.”
