For today’s ISPWP member spotlight, we feature Israel wedding photographer Arnold Szmerling of Arnold Szmerling International Photographers.

Arnold Szmerling Bio:

After having been trained and mentored by Australia’s elite photographers Arnold became the youngest most highly awarded photographer by The Australian Institute of Professional Photographers. With a no compromise attitude, Arnold has been and still is motivated by giving the best, with full heart, to those whom appreciate that photography is a true art form. As a result of his strict discipline to remain true to himself, he has pursued clients with the same passion for great photography.

How did you get your start and why did you choose wedding photography as a career?

Since I remember I have always loved photography. I came across this photo recently and realized I was destined to a photographer from an early age. I received my first camera at the age of 7 and remember taking it to my first summer youth camp, where I captured moments depicting life over the summer. During my teens my father gave me his SLR and this was the catalyst to develop my technical skills and experiment photographing various subjects. At the age of 16, I received my break and joined on a casual basis, the most successful wedding & portrait studio in Melbourne, Australia. This was my entry into the wedding industry. I commenced assisting predominately in the film department and later became the first assistant for the principal Michael Warshall. In no time I was surrounded by top photographers in the industry attending various seminars, training sharing ideas with them. Michael took on the role as my mentor and educator. In a very short time I was appointed the cinematographer for the studio and concurrently trained as a stills photographer under Michael. He would often refer to me as his protégé. After submitting prints at the annual AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photographers) Awards I became the youngest most highly awarded photographer in Australia at 22. In 1995 I commenced my own photography business and in 2008 launched our business in Israel.

What are some of your favourite local venues?

Moving to Israel became the springboard to increasing my international clientele. Jerusalem is a magnet for weddings and I take pleasure in photographing them in the holy city. I love Jerusalem’s ancient architecture and streetscape of action and diversity of visitors. Jerusalem has some very swank hotels such as Mamilla and the great icon The King David Hotel. The King David recently underwent renovations and their rooms have an art deco feel. The wedding of Lihi and Tomer is a great example also featuring the YMCA across the road. Soon to be completed is the Waldorf Astoria which I am looking forward to photograph in. Tel Aviv is the total flip side of Jerusalem, a modern city on the sea rather than an ancient city on a hill. Lonely Planet has included Tel Aviv as one of the world’s top ten beach cities. There is Old Jaffe on the south side, which is a very popular destination for bride and grooms to be photographed, and at the north end is of course the trendy Tel Aviv Port. There are many reception venues and hotels in the area and which also make a great combination for photographic possibilities. Here are some examples of weddings in Jerusalem: Tiia and Joona, Justin and Mark. Other weddings I have captured as an Israel Wedding Photographer also can be found in a galleries section.

What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

As far as the photographer’s technical abilities are concerned make sure you are shown a variety of complete weddings from beginning to end, not just a folio of images across a selection of different weddings. Make certain the photographer is forthright with exactly what you are receiving. Once these things have been satisfied it is imperative you have a connection with your photographer, as he or she will be spending the whole day with you. Personally, if I feel I haven’t connected with a couple I will not take on the assignment.

What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

I enjoy the variety of clients and their unique weddings so it is difficult to narrow what I prefer. I do enjoy more intimate events without the “rent a crowd” some people may have with over 600 guests.

How important is it to hire an experienced wedding photographer?

It is more important to hire a skilled photographer who has mastered his craft.

Do you do “destination weddings?” If so, what are your favourite destinations?

I have photographed destination weddings and look forward to increasing this side of the business. When I lived in Melbourne, Australia one wedding, which stands out, took place in a popular resort called Sanctuary Cove which is very close to Port Douglas in Queensland. It was a three-day event where Pip Mushin, actor, director and film producer married Bindy Edelman a portrait photographer at the time. We took pre-wedding photos at the spa resort the day before. The ceremony the next day took place on the beach in the shade under these huge palm trees. The following evening they held an intimate dinner on the beach for their guests whom all flew up for the event. The atmosphere during the entire time was utopia. Now living in Israel it feels I am 24/7 at a “destination” location. As an Israel Wedding Photographer I now find many of my clients are flying from around the world to be married here. Living in such a central location I see opportunities to photograph in Europe while remaining competitive in pricing.

How would you describe your style of photography?

My repertoire expands from the Rembrandt classic, the Hollywood glamour, Lifestyle reportage and the popular Pure Candid grab shot. This stems from learning classical portraiture and over the years incorporating my own interpretation through experience and further training. A common attribute and theme you see in my images is the ability to capture my subjects “Neshama” which is one’s spirit, soul or inner-self. When you look at my wedding stories you quickly absorb who the bride and groom are.

Do you offer albums? If so, describe the albums you offer and why you think it’s important to provide albums.

We do offer albums and photo books as part of our complete service. Our products are sourced from different countries to enable us to offer our clients’ the best albums worldwide at various budgets. I also developed the worlds’ most exclusive “Platinum Album”, inspired by the Cinema viewing experience. We recently sourced a close alternative for budget minded clients.

I feel it is important to offer a complete service and our clients have piece of mind they will end up with a quality artistic album stress free. All they have to do is choose their favourite images and we will do the rest. Some clients even prefer us to choose the images particular for their second or third functions (not weddings). Also statistically, I have found couples who only receive files never do anything with them. Photography was always intended to end up in print form and I believe it still applies today.

What (or who) inspires you?

No doubt cinema is a huge influence for inspiration for both composition and lighting techniques. I have always considered myself a movie buff and approach my locations as a movie set.

I frequently refer back to the greats including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau, Jeanloup Sieff, Horst P. Horst and Helmut Newton.

I also have to mention my artistic mentor and friend Peter Van Der Veer whom nurtured my talent to the level it is today. Peter was a student of Athol Shmith together with Bill Henson. Peter’s level of understanding and knowledge is a rare find.

What would you say was the biggest reason for your success?

My initial success has been attributed “to the jobs I didn’t do”. With a no compromise attitude, I have and still am motivated by giving the best, with full heart, to those whom appreciate that photography is a true art form. As a result of this strict discipline to remain true to myself, I pursue clients with the same passion for great photography and enjoyment of life.

What are the biggest challenges facing wedding photographers today?

I believe the major challenge to wedding photographers applies to all photographers in general. In most countries to work even as a plumber or electrician, one has to be licensed. The photography industry has no such filter mechanism and anyone with a camera can call himself or herself a photographer and believe it.

With the advent of digital technology, some skills relating to post production has become accessible to the public and no longer monopolized by professional photographers. Instagram is one example of this.

The upside: photography has become more cool then ever before and people’s appreciation of photography as an art form is at an all time high.

In my opinion, the middle market has wasted away and photographers are enjoying success both in the mass volume end and exclusive markets.

The key for success is to specialize in a particular area of photography and identify one’s own niche.

How do you think or would like people to describe you?

He is serious about his profession and committed to excellence. Easy going, gentle natured, loves life and caring. Just a good guy.

Why do you think people turn to you to photograph their weddings?

No doubt they love my work. However, I feel it is much more than that. My clientele’ seek quality and value for their investment. I am not the only photographer offering this level of service. So it really comes down to the connection I make with my clients. In a nutshell they “get it”, that I am only interested in servicing their best interests first. At the end of the day, you are only as good as your last job.

If you weren’t a wedding photographer, what would you be?

A photographer. I feel this was my destiny. I can’t imagine doing anything else.

How has your extensive experience in wedding photography helped you in difficult circumstances on a wedding day?

Sure, it’s quite normal for the families to be a bit nervous on the wedding day. Participants may have mixed emotions and sometimes not everything goes to plan. I often am able to bring calmness to the situation and assist because of my experience. I also offer a photography concierge service to make sure everything runs smoothly on the day and the pressure is taken from the bride and groom and their respective families.

Examples of what we have done is last minute dress making repairs, diffusing misunderstandings, coordinating with other vendors so everything plans on time in a smooth fashion.

All in all, we want to make it the most enjoyable experience for our clients.

What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

It is best to choose your photographer with your heart. You just have to realize you specifically like the pictures or not. Because, you see exactly how your wedding will be seen by this photographer. What moments he catches. If you smile when you watch these pictures, if you feel the heat in the chest – this is your photographer!

What’s your favorite part of the wedding day to photograph?

At any time, during the wedding day, something really interesting can happen and every second I am on the lookout! It does not matter what part of the wedding it is – getting ready with loving parents and family and fun friends, a touching ceremony, an enchanting evening at the restaurant. All moments are unique and therefore I love all stages of the festivities!

What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

Be happy and calm! You are in the hands of a professional. No need to worry about appearance or dress. This is your day! You are the most beautiful on this day, because you are a bride. Enjoy the wedding, a unique moment, happiness! And remember your professional photographer will help you!

What do you find is the biggest challenge in wedding photography?

The most difficult thing – to help the newlyweds open up, relax, feel their emotions. If the photographer is a real professional – he can, through his experience, help the couple open up, so that sincere and vivid emotions will be reflected in the photographs, reflecting the day.

How would you describe your style of photography?

I think it’s capturing the moment like journalistic. I’m usually looking for inspiration in Jeff Ascough’s work.

Do you offer albums? If so, describe the albums you offer and why you think it’s important to provide albums.

We offer individually designed albums with different levels of complexity. The album allows you to see a picture of the wedding day as a whole, and to tell the story of your wedding, even to people who were not present. That wedding book you will discover in 20-30 years to see and remember those touching moments with your children and then your grandchildren! This is the legacy of your family!

What (or who) inspires you?

First of all it’s Jeff Ascough. Also Christian Oth, Emin Kuliyev, and Joe Buissink.

What’s the best photography-related advice you’ve been given?

This advice I got after reading the article Emin Kuliyev and it goes something like this – the path to perfection is not just a goal to be the best – it is work for every shot that would raise your bar and do so every time.

Do you do destination weddings?

Yes, of course! We are ready to go with you anywhere in the world – even to the Arctic! One of our favorite destinations is Paris, as simple as this sounds!

What kind of weddings do you love to photograph?

All weddings are beautiful in their own way. We love our customers here and now during the wedding day. Weddings for me are very interesting events filled with special meaning. At every wedding there are a lot of interesting details, sincere emotions and unexpected funny accidents!

How important is to hire an experienced photographer?

If you value your wedding memories, and you appreciate the beauty – that is definitely YES! Only a professional can ensure that any single moment of this special day would not be missed.

What do you do for fun when you’re not shooting wedding?

My wife and I have a lovely little daughter. We really love her and I spend with her all my ??free time! Believe me, an infinite number of amusing situations happen with her every day.

Biggest reason for your success?

We operate a family – me and my wife. We understand what love is and how important it is to keep every moment of your life. We really love what we do and spend every day trying to do our job better and better, to find something new. We love our customers and they respond to us in return.

How would you describe your style of photography?

It’s pure photojournalistic. No flash, only natural light, no setting up and only live emotions.

What are some of your favorite local venues?

In Moscow my favorite place is Stariy Arbat. Center of the city, beautiful and interesting place.

How did you get your start and why did you choose wedding photography as a career?

As a wedding photojournalist who has to use one’s own peculiar sense of catching every unique moments & details. These are all to compose a once in a life time wedding, the most important day of groom & bride. The strong sense of commitment rose after my very first time as a photojournalist for a friend. So I decided to be a wedding photojournalist.

What are some of your favorite local venues?

I love shooting in some historical buildings such as Bethaniel Church & the University of Hong Kong. These locations inspire me a lot and put me in the mood for shooting.

What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

Of course every photographer has his own visual sense and angle of seeing things. How can a bride tell the difference and decide who is good as she isn’t a professional? It’s simple, do you like it? Or not? Photographers capture with mood, you choose with feeling.

What’s your favorite part of the wedding day to photograph?

The touching moments of groom & bride with their parents.

What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

I love to shoot outdoor wedding ceremony because the atmosphere is very relaxed & everyone enjoys this atmosphere.

What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

Forget about all cameras. Just be a beautiful bride and join your wedding with families and friends. A professional journalist will capture your most sweet and natural moments.

How important is it to hire an experienced wedding photographer?

Brides & Grooms are enjoying their wedding so there might be some details they missed. Experienced photographers can always pay attention to details and find the most important things.

What do you find is the biggest challenge in wedding photography?

Creative, creative & creative! Especially in Hong Kong market, not like in foreign countries, the format of the weddings are very similar to each other (locations of ceremony, banquets, etc). So “Being creative, Breaking the rules” are very important for a HK wedding photographer who would like to maintain a high quality of work. We always think how to shoot in a creative way under the similar environments.

Do you do “destination weddings?” If so, what are your favorite destinations?

Yes! Shooting in a new place and new environment are the fountain of inspiration. Bali in Indonesia & Santonrini in Greece are my favorite wedding destinations.

How would you describe your style of photography?

I insist every photo is telling tales or emotions. People can read it through the photographs, just like the pictures in story book. A photograph can reach people only when it’s endowed life.

Do you offer albums? If so, describe the albums you offer and why you think it’s important to provide albums.

We do offer albums. Nowadays, we can get any electronic products easily; photos can be shared through the internet in a second. But, we think that a photo album is still important to be a media to keep memories. Let’s imagine, a couple sits on the sofa side by side and looking at their wedding albums. How sweet is this moment? Instead of squeezing in front of a monitor.

What would you say was the biggest reason for your success?

Being a designer for 10 years, it enhances my angle of composition & aesthetic judgment. Studying in design school always trains how to break through & create new ideas, which are also benefit in my career. Besides above reasons my passion in photo shooting is one of the biggest reason for my success too!

Ed Atrero Bio:

Ed Atrero, of Atrero Photography, is a multiple award winning wedding photographer with WPJA, FEARLESS photographers, and was named ISPWP Photographer of the Quarter. Ed shot his first wedding in 1998 and began Atrero Photography in 2005 after years of prodding from friends and family. Along the way, Ed caught the teaching bug and became a tireless and dedicated teacher drawing on his over 20 years of photographic experience. Most importantly he enjoys seeing the light bulbs turn on in his students’ heads. He has taught at the renowned Escola De Imagem in Brasil, at a sold out workshop of 65 students at Wedding Brasil, at WPPI in Las Vegas, and most recently at the Foundations Conference in New Orleans along with Jan Garcia. He is also the host of the Shoot Like a NINJA Workshop series based in San Diego. His teaching approach focuses heavily on student critique, image deconstruction, and focus on mastering the fundamentals of photography: seeing light, composition and moment.

How did you get your start and why did you chose wedding photography as a career?

I became a wedding photographer 7 years ago when I first saw work by Australian wedding photographers Yervant and Jerry Ghinois. It was unlike any wedding photos I have seen before and the images looked like they were from the pages of Vogue. After seeing their fashion inspired approach to weddings I was inspired to do my own take on it. Later our style developed more of an artistic documentary feel.

How has your extensive experience in wedding photography helped you in difficult circumstances on a wedding day?

Over the years, I’ve gotten good at “reading” weddings and anticipating moments and where I need to position myself for a shot. I think this lets me worry less about the logistical side of things, so that I can just think more creatively when shooting the standard wedding moments.

What are some of your favorite local venues?

I love shooting at modern San Diego venues as it matches the style of our work, such as the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego that we shot. There are some great modern venues in La Jolla, such as Scripps Seaside Forum. I’m also big fan of the movie 500 Days and so I really old Hollywood and old Los Angeles architecture and venues such as the Millennium Biltmore and The Vibiana.

What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

Spend time looking through a wedding photographer’s portfolio and a few entire weddings. You’ll typically only see 10% or less of a photographers work on a blog from any given wedding. Make sure he or she is covering every aspect of the day, not just reception details and portraits.

What’s your favorite part of the wedding day to photograph?

I love shooting portraits the most as I feel this is the most creative part of the day for me. I feel really bummed whenever I don’t get to shoot enough portraits.

What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

I love to party, so weddings with a rowdy party going crowd are my favorite.

What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

Lack of time is one of biggest killers for the day. We’ve been to weddings where hair/makeup or limousine were late by an hour or more, thus compressing the schedule for photos. So brides need to do a lot of due diligence here. Search out recommendations and look at a vendor’s track record to make sure there are no red flags.

How important is it to hire an experienced wedding photographer?

An experienced wedding photographer knows what moments to look for and is always alert to shoot them and and execute the shot well.

What do you find is the biggest challenge in wedding photography?

Out doing the last wedding I shot.

What do you do for fun when you’re not shooting weddings?

I’m usually at my favorite watering hole drinking a craft brew.

How would you describe your style of photography?

Creative Documentary.

What do you offer to clients that is unique? What is your Unique Selling Proposition?

Our local Southern California market suffers from an overabundance of photographers shooting couples in afternoon backlit fields a la Jose Villa. I think our work stands out in a sea of sameness. We offer an artistic documentary approach that we believe very few are doing in our local market.

Do you offer albums? If so, describe the albums you offer and why you think it’s important to provide albums.

We offer wedding albums in our standard collection. They are an heirloom to pass down to generations. A Facebook account won’t be around for 100 years, but an album will.

Have you found any products, services, or seminars that have made a difference to your photography or your business?

Hands down… The Foundation Workshop and the Yin Yang Workshop are the two workshops that have impacted my photography and business the most.

What’s the best photography-related advice you’ve been given?

This sounds a bit New Age-ish, but it really is true: master the technical aspects of your camera so that it becomes a natural extension of your hands and eyes. This frees you up to think creatively and not worry about the technical aspects while shooting.

What would you say was the biggest reason for your success?

Staying hungry (in a photographic sense). Never being completely satisfied with my work. There’s always more to learn and improve on. Be good at everything.

Do you follow any photography or business blogs that you would recommend?

Blogs are so 2010. I follow Guy Kawasaki on Google+. There are some really talented photographers on 500px.

What future plans do you have for your business for the next year?

I love to teach and recently began offering a series of San Diego photography workshops aimed at beginning and intermediate photographers.

What is the biggest challenge facing wedding photographers today?

There are many talented photographers popping up all the time. Staying ahead of the curve and creating interesting work that stands out is always our biggest challenge. I think the biggest thing that helped us in this aspect of our photography is to seek influences outside of wedding photography such as movies, shows, painting, and of course other genres of photography.

I am a wedding photographer based in Johannesburg, South Africa. I love traveling, meeting new and interesting people and seeing new places. I have an undying passion for photography and to create photographs that will last a lifetime.

How did you get your start and why did you chose wedding photography as a career?

My career started out as a freelance newspaper photographer and I spend years after that in advertising, I started realizing that there is much more satisfying things to photograph than hardship and pain. I was doing wedding photography on the side for years and always loved it, so I decided to pursue a full time career in wedding photography. And I never looked back on that decision.

How has your extensive experience in wedding photography helped you in difficult circumstances on a wedding day?

Experience is everything in wedding photography, the more weddings you shoot the better you get in all aspects of the game. The bride and groom will always have certain expectations of there wedding photographer, producing great images is not where it stops. Calming the nerves and taking control over situations is expected from professionals and one only learns these things from experience.

Tell us about some of the more unique weddings you’ve shot.

For me every wedding is unique, special and different. From the décor to the people, everything is different but also have so much in common, Love.

What are some of your favorite local venues?

I am a wedding photographer based in Johannesburg, South Africa. I am very fortunate to be able to capture weddings all over South Africa. From the city to the bush, from maintains to beaches. Because I travel so much I hardly ever shoot at the same venue more than once in a season.

What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

Make sure you get along with your photographer, you will be spending most of the day with him/her. If you are not comfortable it will show in the pictures. Also forget about the camera and enjoy yourself!

What’s your favorite part of the wedding day to photograph?

For me the bride and groom’s portraits are always something special and something I look forward too. But I also enjoy photographing the details at the venue and all the bride’s accessories.

What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

I love all types of weddings, especially where the people are relaxed and enjoying their time.

What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

Just be yourself and relax, don’t worry about the pictures. The best photographs will come out when you are comfortable with the photographer.

How important is it to hire an experienced wedding photographer?

The question is, will you trust Uncle Bob doing a brain surgery? If he is not a surgeon the answer will be NO! So hire a professional and be sure to get the result that you are looking for in your wedding photography.

What do you find is the biggest challenge in wedding photography?

Not to dehydrate myself. Working in a hot country brings challenges other than photography.

Do you do “destination weddings?” If so, what are your favorite destinations?

Yes, I love traveling and shooting at new locations. I travel for weddings all over the world and been shooting in the USA, United Kingdom and Europe.

What do you do for fun when you’re not shooting weddings?

Watch sports, play golf and enjoying life with my wife and our lovely dog.

How would you describe your style of photography?

Fun, Romantic, Relaxed and Natural.

What do you offer to clients that is unique? What is your Unique Selling Proposition?

Every wedding becomes a personal affair for me, from meeting the client for the first time to delivering the final product, I make sure that I am happy with everything before handing it over to a client.

Yes, I find that the wedding album is the most exciting part of the product. We design our albums closely with the bride and groom and we get the result that will last for ages.

What’s the best photography-related advice you’ve been given?

Emma Rose Bio:

Emma Rose is an award-winning ISPWP wedding photographer who got started in the industry 12 years ago. From film and darkroom to digital, Emma has been documenting weddings that artfully show an emotional side of the day.

How did you get your start and why did you choose wedding photography as a career?

I started photographing weddings by photographing my brother’s beautiful and simple sea-side wedding in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and by second-shooting weddings for a couple of established Vancouver wedding photographers. I love weddings. I love art. It seemed natural to see the two come together.

How has your extensive experience in wedding photography helped you in difficult circumstances on a wedding day?

I’ve photographed so many weddings over the last 12 years that I know something is always bound to go wrong. Usually it’s just one thing. So I tell brides that when something goes wrong, “there’s always something, it was relatively minor and now we’ve gotten that out of the way!”

Tell us about some of the more unique weddings you’ve shot.

I look at every wedding as being unique, there are always different people, different lighting conditions, different details and surprises. I once photographed an outdoor wedding set on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, and when a thunderstorm rolled in during the [uncovered] ceremony, you couldn’t hear the vows over the sound of the rain and the thunder. Very few of the guests had umbrellas. And I heard about that wedding from prospective clients during a meeting the following week! So that wedding always stands out in my mind. I love to photograph cultural traditions such as stepping over the broom, hand fasting, giving bread, tea ceremonies, and placing of crowns. I love discovering what makes a wedding unique.

What is your favorite local venue?

I used to have an automatic answer for that, because I used to love outdoor weddings so much and Grand Pre was my favourite location for a wedding. Each time I go back to the hotels in Halifax though it seems they’ve renovated and become more beautiful (e.g., the Westin Hotel, Lord Nelson and Prince George have all recently been renovated), and I’ve changed the way I approach wedding photography so I’m not looking for the same things anymore… I really enjoy doing indoor shoots now because there are things to shoot through and reflect in. I had a lot of fun photographing a wedding that was entirely on board the tall ship Silva as it sailed, and I love shooting in restaurants like Murphy’s that have so much character. I recently photographed a wedding at a yacht club, the RNSYS’s Saraguay House, where they shot off fireworks over the Northwest Arm of Halifax Harbour, you can’t do that at just any venue, and it was fabulous!

What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

Go for style. Make sure your photographer has a style that suits you. If you’re not sure what styles there are or what appeals to you, do some research, look around (and not just locally), and decide which style you are most attracted to—do you want your photos to look like a magazine shoot, are you into lots of set-up photos, or do you want a documentary approach? Take a hard look at photographers’ portfolios, if there are things that bug you, things that are missing, things you don’t love, keep looking, you may not be a match. Meet with your photographer, ask them tons of questions, and email them to update them on things. Go for the engagement session if it’s in your budget. If you’re not feeling the connection, or they don’t get back to you, you may not have found the right photographer for you.

What’s your favorite part of the wedding day to photograph?

I love photographing the bride getting ready. There is so much promise to the day, so much to anticipate, wonder about, look forward to. Anything can happen!

What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

I love weddings where emotions are running high! I love it when people forget you’re around, where they let their emotions show, they hug, laugh, cry, exclaim, dance, and outwardly show their love, anxiety, sadness, joy!

What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

Let go! Really! Let go of all the planning, the details, it’s done now. There’s nothing more to worry about or decide, so let go and really feel what the day is about. If you’re still worrying about details, you’re going to look worried and you’re going to miss opportunities to connect with people throughout the day. Connecting with people emotionally (including the groom!) makes for great photographs.

How important is it to hire an experienced wedding photographer?

Trust is important for creating great wedding photographs. In order to trust your photographer, you have to know that they are comfortable, flexible, and that they know what to expect. You can only get that through experience. Photography is not the wedding detail where you want to cut costs; there are lots of people out there today buying digital cameras and trying to make money with them, and they will undoubtedly charge you less. But wedding photography is fast-paced and combines commercial, portrait and journalistic photography with ever-changing lighting conditions and it takes at least a couple of years to become good at it, even for experienced portrait or journalistic photographers. If you want photographs you will be proud to show for years and you’re working in a tight budget, consider the cost of mistakes that an inexperienced person can make. Maybe there are things that can be cut that won’t mean quite as much in the years to come.

What do you find is the biggest challenge in wedding photography?

You have to be courageous when you’re a wedding photographer, as crazy as that might sound. You have to take risks and go outside your comfort zone to get creative shots. This is scary because you want to make your clients happy. If you screw up they’re not going to be happy, so you have to take calculated risks that are likely to pay off!

How would you describe your style of photography?

My style is primarily artful. It is photojournalistic but includes a healthy dose of portraits (directed shots) as well as details and imagery showing the mood of the wedding.

How would you describe the current state of the wedding photography industry, and where do you think wedding photography is headed in the years to come?

Because most wedding photographers post blogs or client galleries online and publicly, there are huge pressures for wedding photographers to produce outstanding work at each and every wedding. You’ve got to have the best and latest gear, you’ve got to have great branding and products or clients simply won’t continue to come to you. The top end of the wedding photography industry is becoming a highly competitive and talented group of people.

What (or who) inspires you?

I’m inspired by art and light everywhere, in magazines, interior design, in my everyday environment, movies, photojournalism and other wedding photographers. Contest galleries like the ISPWP publishes, are great collections to go to for inspiration.

What would you say was the biggest reason for your success?

Following my heart when I’m shooting.

Do you follow any photography blogs that you would recommend?

I love the work of and follow regularly: Chrisman Studios, Davina + Daniel, Anna Kuperberg, Brett Butterstein, Apertura, Del Sol, Jeff Ascough, and Jose Villa.

What future plans do you have for your business for the next year?

I constantly push myself and challenge myself to produce better images, to make that shot better, learn new techniques, reach for more!

What is the biggest challenge facing wedding photographers today?

Due to the digital era and the lower purchase price of decent cameras, the wedding photography market is getting saturated with low-end options. I try to see this as a positive influence; when I’m shooting and editing, I ask myself, “How can you differentiate this image from one that the bride’s uncle took with his digital SLR?” It’s no longer enough to take decent photographs with a nice camera and expect to make money or win awards. This pushes me to reach further, work harder, think more, and react faster, it’s the spirit of competition!

Sandra Mañas Bio:

Sandra Mañas is a professional photographer based on the island of Mallorca, Spain. She graduated in Economics and worked in the investment banking industry in London for a few years, before deciding to change her life and move to Mallorca to pursue her dream to become a wedding photographer. Sandra photographs weddings from couples all over the world and enjoys being exposed to different cultures and traditions. She is a mum of two beautiful baby girls and on her spare time she likes to photograph her family, go to the beach and eat ice cream!

How did you get your start and why did you chose wedding photography as a career?

In my life there really is a before and after photography, as I turned my hobby into my career. In my previous life I was a client service manager working in an investment management firm in the City of London. I have always been arty and creative and when I was a teen I loved interior design and art history. However, where I grew up I did not see a big career in art so my practical side took the best of me and I studied Economics at the University of Barcelona. I imagined myself as a high flying executive working for a multinational company. But the very first day of my first job -working at American Express- I thought to myself: “what I am doing here?”, “I don´t like office work!” So I decided to find my real passion, which by the way, took me about 5 years to find, until I discovered photography.

How has your extensive experience in wedding photography helped you in difficult circumstances on a wedding day?

My most difficult wedding was the one I shot the day after my mother passed away. I had not slept at all that night and was devastated, but I could not find a replacement so I decided to go ahead with it. It was a sunny and beautiful day and being surrounded by happy people helped me withstand the day. It´s funny that one person´s worst day can be another person´s happiest. The bride and groom did not know my personal circumstances and they were very happy with the photos.

Tell us about some of the more unique weddings you’ve shot?

Photographing the wedding of two ladies was new to me. In Spain same sex marriage is legal, so this couple flew all the way from Australia for their wedding. At the end of the day, it all went very well and it felt natural to photograph two people in love. Also, I have always wanted to shoot a wedding on a boat. Living on an island it´s not much to ask!

What are some of your favorite local venues?

I am a wedding photographer based on the beautiful island of Mallorca, in Spain. The Mediterranean landscape and light are extraordinary so I enjoy some of the best wedding venues here. I especially love the historic house where I got married myself, Son Marroig. This house museum dates from the XVI century and overlooks the stunning cliffs on the sea. This house has a tower where legend says the last woman in the area was kidnapped by the pirates. It also boasts a small Ionic temple made of Carrara marble built specially to admire the magnificent sunset.

What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

I´d say get a photographer with a personality you like, with whom you have a good feeling and whose style you love. If he or she is over your budget, cut down on flowers or something else, but not on photography. If you are on a budget, another alternative is to leave the album for later, and order it for your first wedding anniversary. Also, don´t hire friends to shoot your wedding. I know a friend that got a friend to photograph her big day and he got all drunk so she ended up without a single photo of her and her husband together!

What’s your favorite part of the wedding day to photograph?

I always loved Fashion photography, so I love shooting the bride on her own before the ceremony. I try to do stylish poses that look natural and match the brides personality. I´d say the most challenging bit for me is posing the couple and making it look natural.

What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

I love to photograph small, intimate weddings, where the bride and groom are emotional, fun and collaborative.

What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

Go with the flow. Relax. Enjoy your day. Don´t think about the wedding planning, if something does not turn out not as expected, just let go. Smile and I´ll do the rest! Also, wear comfortable shoes!

How important is it to hire an experienced wedding photographer?

In our industry experience is key. The more weddings you shoot, the more creative and technical skills you´ll have and the better you´ll become. In my career, experience has also taught me to stay calm under pressure, when flash does not fire or something goes wrong. You also learn to be imaginative and find alternative ways to achieve the result you want. I used to be quite impacient and a bit blunt with clients and over the years I have learned to deal with all kinds of brides and how to speak my mind in a calm and subtle way. I have also learned that you need to educate your client and set some limits. For example, when I was starting out, I used to say “yes” to anything a client asked. Now I know how to say “no” in a polite and professional way.

What do you find is the biggest challenge in wedding photography?

Selling myself is my biggest challenge. Also, when I started out I did not realize I would spend most of my time doing other stuff other than taking photos, such as fixing my printer, uploading photos on my blog, shopping for a new hard drive, insuring equipment, etc. Most of my time is spent away from my camera.

Do you do “destination weddings?” If so, what are your favorite destinations?

Being a Mallorca wedding photographer, most of my clients are international and come from places as far away as the US, Australia, Norway, Russia, etc to get married here. I love meeting people from different nationalities and learning their traditions.

What do you do for fun when you’re not shooting weddings?

When I am not in the studio or shooting weddings I am with my precious two little girls and with my husband, who is also a photographer. I adore dressing up my girls up and going to the park and take photos of them. I also try to find the time to go the gym to stretch out my back and neck. I have discovered a new machine that hangs me head down from my feet, like a bat, that leaves me brand new.

How would you describe your style of photography?

My style is natural, glamourous and romantic. Timeless would also be a good word to describe it, as I like photos that image well and that my clients will love for decades.

What do you offer to clients that is unique? What is your Unique Selling Proposition?

I believe each photographer is inherently unique. Even if we get inspired by other photographers or try to copy them, we will never be the same. So what is unique about me is my creative eye, my artistic abilities and my personality. I try to exceed my customer´s expectations and offer an excellent service as well.

Do you offer albums? If so, describe the albums you offer and why you think it’s important to provide albums.

The album is the client´s memories turned into art. I offer stylish coffee-table books, with a photographic cover. Ever since I started offering them they have been a huge success. I think it´s very important to offer an album nowadays since we are all storing our memories on the computer and never find the time to print copies anymore (at least to me!).

How would you describe the current state of the wedding photography industry, and where do you think wedding photography is headed in the years to come?

I think video is becoming more and more important. I have still not figured out how to do fusion because I am afraid to lose a photo moment if I am shooting video at the same time. Also, with more and more competition in our industry, fusion will help you set yourself apart.

What (or who) inspires you?

The beauty around me, perfume commercials and fashion magazines. Jerry Ghionis is my other source of inspiration and admiration. I also love Mario Testino and Annie Leibovitz.

What are your views on digitally enhanced photos?

I am not a big fan of heavy Photoshop retouching. I like clean, vibrant images and I try to capture the perfect image in-camera so I don´t have to do much post processing.

Are you involved in any charitable cause?

I have been collaborating with the Vicente Ferrer Foundation for many years. The VF Foundation is a development NGO committed to improving living conditions of the most disadvantaged communities in Andhra Pradesh, India. By becoming a sponsor of a boy or girl, you help their whole communities get access to hospitals, water, schooling and help the children have a better future. I´m also setting up a series of workshops at a local furniture store for kids, with the intention to raise money for a Mallorcan foundation for kids with cancer. Ever since becoming a mum, I feel very sensitive towards children´s issues.

How do you build relatioships with the people you photograph?

Because my clients come from abroad, it´s difficult to get to know them before the wedding. I´ve had clients booking me online and only showing up on their wedding day! I always try to bring out the best in every couple by making them relaxed in front of the camera and playing the usual tricks to make them smile.

If you were an actress, what film would you have liked to star in?

I would have loved being the star of Dirty Dancing so I could have danced with Patrick Swayze!

My 9 years experience as photographer help me in every situation. I work for the audience. I aim to surprise, to bring joy, to shock. I always feel happy on achieving my aims and when receiving a client’s genuine reaction to a completed piece of art.

Tell us about some of the more unique weddings you’ve shot.

Every wedding is unique and different. Different people, location, weather, reactions, but one thing always the same – LOVE. Extreme weddings were in windy and rainy weather, another in South Africa in a non–safe part of city, a winter wedding on a record cold day, a wedding where I was shooting on the lake and my boat started taking on water There have been a lot of unique comical situations, that is why I am crazy about my job!

What are some of your favorite local venues?

Every location becomes perfect when the bride and groom are happy and you could feel it! When love in the air it is the most important!

What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

If you are looking at my website, and you feel that you want to become a beautiful bride in the near future, then you have already found your wedding photographer! You need to be calm about your decision, only then you can enjoy your beautiful wedding day.

What’s your favorite part of the wedding day to photograph?

Bride and groom portraits are one of my favorite moments. I enjoy shooting true feelings and I admire the ability to create high art.

What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

Details and style in weddings is important for great photos but mostly I love to photograph your happiness and emotions of that day.

What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

I am happy to say that always I work with my fiancée and she is a very professional make up artist. We suggest packages where make up for bride is included and she could be near you all dy – that way you will look stunning in all portraits photos and all your wedding day.

Do you do “destination weddings?” If so, what are your favorite destinations?

Yes, of course! I am in love with Italy – so all cities is the most beautiful destinations. Moreover I am enjoying the French Riviera and Provence. And obviously all beach weddings!

Mixture of the journalistic approach and an impressive beauty & high fashion look. To surprise, to bring joy, to shock, to feel in love!

Alec y Leticia Bio:

Five years ago we started out on our long distance race, developing and honing our concept of the type of photography we wanted to offer. We started to mould our own style, a style that like us – on a personal level – is in constant evolution and which matures as do our minds, our ideas and our outlook on life. We shall continue to make every effort to explore the creative possibilities open to us, to offer to all the couples who trust us with a record of their special day, a unique and sparkling memento to treasure.

How did you get your start and why did you chose wedding photography as a career?

Around nine years ago we started working in press photography as well as for a photographic studio which specialized in weddings. We loved the wedding photography, so five years back we set up our own business, AiS Fotografos. We both have an interest in photography which dates back 16 to 18 years and we wanted to incorporate more of what we did in our personal work and things we’d learned from the press work into our wedding photos.

How has your extensive experience in wedding photography helped you in difficult circumstances on a wedding day?

For most of the brides and grooms it’s the first time they find themselves at the centre of a wedding, so having someone who can improvise and transmit calm is key to solving unexpected or difficult situations. Our experience lets us anticipate most situations or react with a cool head when things don’t work out as planned. If there have been delays in the run up to the wedding, if the bride’s father has misplaced his suit, if the weather is not what was expected – so much can happen. On one occasion a tree crashed onto the car one of us was in on the way to the ceremony with the bridal party! It’s thanks to our experience that, should such things happen, we can still remain calm and collected and communicate that calm to the couple. Tell us about some of the more unique weddings you’ve shot.

Recently we’ve a had a few weddings which were very emotional and special for us. One was in Los Navalmorales, a village in Toledo, in a house that has belonged to the groom’s family since the 19th century. Alejandro is from Toledo, Patricia is from the Reunion Islands and they live together in Paris. The wedding ceremony was a romantic candle-lit affair in the wine cellars and caves of the house. To sustain the magical atmosphere we didn’t use flash so asnot to break the mood. We took the couple’s pictures in different parts of the house. On the day of the ceremony there were only 14 guests: the bride and groom, the parents, brothers and sisters, their respective partners and of course the grandmother who lives in Navalmorales, which made for a very intimate day, a very special occasion to share with them. The family meal was celebrated in the patio with Samanthacatering in charge of the food.
On the next day there was a party to celebrate the wedding, with friends coming from all over the world. It was one of the most multilingual weddings we have ever seen. There was a fascinating variety of food from typical Spanish dishes, some food which is traditional on the Reunion Islands, and the traditional village band provided the music. as well as the traditional village band.

We also had the chance to shoot a wedding in Catiglioncello (Tuscany). Marta the bride is from Rome and the groom Luis is from Madrid, where both of them live. They got married in the morning in the Castelo Pasquini in Castiglioncello. This is a a seaside village where Marta spent her childhood summers. They had an open air buffet on the green next to Il Cardellino restaurant. The bride’s wonderful dress was designed by La Canalla de Vigo, an atelier which specializes in theatre costumes. Marta’s red Camper shoes and the bouquet of red peppers were the ideal accessories in this special and magical wedding. To add to the magic, the children’s entertainers kept the little ones and the “not so little ones” captivated.

What are some of your favorite local venues?

One of our favourite places is Aldea Santillana, an amazing place in the Madrid mountains. Its location has fantastic views of Atazar reservoir and wide open skies. The whole place has been painstakingly sculpted and decorated, with fantastic interiors and exteriors. The great lighting at night along with the fantastic gardens and stables make Aldea Santillana a perfect place to photograph a wedding.
We also love the Monastery of San Bartolomé of Lupiana in Guadalajara, its a national monument which exudes history and elegance, full of elegant nooks and crannies which let you photograph in a wonderful setting. The Royal Balneario de Salinas located on the shores of the Cantabrian sea, is one of the best places to celebrate your wedding in Asturias. Fantastic cuisine, a view straight out to sea, spectacular beaches like the Beach of Silence for the couple’s session as well as its proximity to Oviedo, Gijon and Aviles – this all helps to make it ideal.

What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

There are two key points. The first is finding a photographer whose style you like and whose work you trust, so that it’s one less thing you have to worry about the day of the wedding. The second to have a good rapport with the photographer. You have to feel comfortable with someone who will be with you all through your special day.

What’s your favorite part of the wedding day to photograph?

Every part of the wedding is important, personally I like to capture the more spontaneous, more natural moments of the wedding on the one hand, but also love playing with the chemistry and aesthetic elements during the couple’s shoot.

What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

Multicultural weddings, the meeting of two or more cultures celebrating a couple’s love. Even though many of the guests don’t speak the same language, they still have a wonderful time together.

What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

A. An overall look that suits the bride’s personality, which will make her more comfortable and confident in front of the camera, as well as shoes that won’t make her suffer with every step (if shoes pinch it shows in the face no matter how much you smile).

B. Relax and enjoy every moment, that’s why we think that each part of the wedding has to have a good time margin. Rushing from one part of the day to hurry to the next causes more stress

C. Avoid clichés and make your wedding into something personal and unique. Forget about the camera and enjoy yourself to the fullest – that would be our top tip.

How important is it to hire an experienced wedding photographer?

An experienced photographer is as important as the value that you place on the images which make up your memories of your wedding.

What do you find is the biggest challenge in wedding photography?

Capturing images that will really take people back to that moment and situation, which will let them relive that day. Taking photos during a wedding is about more than pretty pictures, you want to show real feeling and true emotion.

Do you do “destination weddings?” If so, what are your favorite destinations?

Yes we do! We love traveling, – in essence we are traveling photographers and we particularly enjoy getting to know something of other cultures which are different from our own. It not only makes every destination special, it helps us to grow as photographers and people too.

What do you do for fun when you’re not shooting weddings?

When we’re not shooting weddings we love to travel and photograph places and people from a personal point of view. We also love photographing dogs.

How would you describe your style of photography?

Our photography is very documentary and emotional, what we see and feel is what we transmit with our photos. Light and texture are two of our main tools.

What do you offer to clients that is unique? What is your Unique Selling Proposition?

Apart from offering a professional service which has its origins in fine art photography, where each photo is carefully crafted in camera and in the computer, our rapport with the couples creates a link which is crucial for us and for the couples. We love keeping in touch with many of the couples after we’ve taken their wedding photos, and even taking photos of other important moments after the wedding.

Do you offer albums? If so, describe the albums you offer and why you think it’s important to provide albums?

We offer albums that we design and lay out ourselves. We do it this way because we like to tell the story using a very simple and elegant layout. We like to give our clients a physical reminder in the shape of an album which tells their story.

What (or who) inspires you?

I’m inspired by the couple I’m photographing, my team mates, cinema and many other photographers who may have varying techniques but from whom I can learn, I particularly draw on the work of documentary photographers.

Have you found any products, services, or seminars that have made a difference to your photography or your business?

We try to push ourselves constantly, going to workshops and trying to hone our skills non-stop, its a never ending process… we’re also continually updating equipment as new and better products become available as well as trying new things out to see if they can be incorporated into our workflow.

What’s the best photography-related advice you’ve been given?

Shoot a lot, in your own time.

What would you say was the biggest reason for your success?

The great rapport we have with our clients, that closeness helps us tell the story on the day of the wedding and bring everything across with that extra touch of emotion. Being demanding with our work, working as a team is very enriching and fundamental to getting good results.

For today’s ISPWP member spotlight, we feature Hong Kong wedding photographer KC Chan of KC Professional Photography.

KC Chan Bio:

My passion for photography came at young age. I have always looked at the world and the people in it as inspiration for my pictures. I shoot around 50 weddings per year. This gives me time to get close to my couples and get to know them as individuals, more than clients, so communication with my clients is also an important element to my work.

My typical clients are very relaxed. They view wedding photographs as being so important, but are much more interested in actually enjoying their wedding day than standing having their picture taken.

What’s your favorite part of the wedding day to photograph?

My favorite part of the wedding day is definitely during the ceremony, it’s the highlight of the wedding day and every one who attended.

What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

I like to photographer weddings where people are relaxed and everyone is enjoying their time.

What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

I will suggest to clients to create a list of items that they do not want to photographer to miss, the list could contain people, decorations…etc. Other than that, just relax and be themselves.

How important is it to hire an experienced wedding photographer?

A wedding is an uncontrollable event and by hiring an experienced wedding photographer, they know what to do when the unexpected occurs. Besides, an experienced wedding photographer could also provide valuable advice to the couple from the many weddings they have attended.

What do you find is the biggest challenge in wedding photography?

Getting enough sleep!

Do you do “destination weddings?” If so, what are your favorite destinations?

I shoot a lot of destination weddings each year; as I am based in Hong Kong, most of my destination weddings are in South Asia such as Thailand and Bali. But I did shoot a destination wedding in UK at Leeds Castle, it remains my favorite destination for weddings.

What do you do for fun when you’re not shooting weddings?

I love movies.

How would you describe your style of photography?

My clients usually tell me that they found my style intimate, happy and real.

What do you offer to clients that is unique? What is your Unique Selling Proposition?

My clients not only enjoy looking at my photos, they also found me a very nice person to hang around with. A lot of my clients has become friends and some have even bought me gifts on some special occasions.

What (or who) inspires you?

Romantic movies and love songs inspire me a lot.

What’s the best photography-related advice you’ve been given?

Be honest with your client and never cheat your clients.

Do you follow any photography or business blogs that you would recommend?

I love to read Joe McNally’s blog.
