How did you get your start and why did you chose wedding photography as a career?

I began my career as an advertising photographer but soon I got into social photography that appealed to me as I had the opportunity to grasp people’s true emotions and being in close relationship with them.

Lake Como Italy Wedding Photographer Riccardo Bestetti | Studio Fotografico Bestetti

How has your extensive experience in wedding photography helped you in difficult circumstances on a wedding day?

Certainly a wedding may hide unexpected events, but, as an experienced wedding photographer, I do my best to anticipate and manage them. I’ve learned not to be taken aback, I react to a negative situation and turn it into a favorable one.

Lake Garda Italy Wedding Photographer Riccardo Bestetti | Studio Fotografico Bestetti

What are some of your favorite local venues?

I live in Italy, a romantic and fascinating country, and I have the opportunity to work in venues like Venice, Florence, Lake Como, Lake Garda and the Amalfi Coast. Those are my favorite locations, all of them are simply wonderful.

Venice Wedding Photographer Riccardo Bestetti | Studio Fotografico Bestetti

What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

I realize that many people choose their photographer by basing their decision on the quantity of materials (prints/albums/etc.) included in the package or based solely on cost alone, as if shots could be weighed or counted. It would be nice it were more common for brides to choose a photographer on the basis of how her emotions were stirred by the professional photographer’s shots. I am absolutely sure that’s the only way not to be disappointed when you get to finally see your wedding album.

Florence Italy Wedding Photographer Riccardo Bestetti | Studio Fotografico Bestetti

What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

I love working with people who have different costumes, religions and culture. Those are really the most satisfying shots! Any kind of ceremonies attracts me. In particular I like when a mutual understanding is set between me and the brides, I love it!

Lecco Italy Wedding Photographer Riccardo Bestetti | Studio Fotografico Bestetti

What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

My best tips for brides: “Be happy and spontaneous!”

Lecco Italy Wedding Photographer Riccardo Bestetti | Studio Fotografico Bestetti

How important is it to hire an experienced wedding photographer?

The moment we decide it’s important to have a wedding photographic keepsake we should not even consider a different choice than hiring an experienced wedding photographer.

Lecco Italy Wedding Photographer Riccardo Bestetti | Studio Fotografico Bestetti

How would you describe your style of photography?

I love reporting the event in a journalistic way, documenting what is happening and paying attention to the most touching and relevant moments. Not as the director, but as a spectator when shooting, thus I give the brides photographs that will paint her wedding day through emotions and events.

Lecco Italy Wedding Photographer Riccardo Bestetti | Studio Fotografico Bestetti

What do you offer to clients that is unique?

Well, it’s easy, I offer myself, one way or another, I am unique.

Lecco Italy Wedding Photographer Riccardo Bestetti | Studio Fotografico Bestetti

Do you offer albums? If so, describe the albums you offer and why you think it’s important to provide albums.

Yes, we offer albums suitably made by a Tuscan craftsman who scrupulously respects the old tanning and leather cutting craftsmanship. A first-class ‘container’ makes the ‘contents’ more precious.

Lecco Italy Wedding Photographer Riccardo Bestetti | Studio Fotografico Bestetti

How would you describe the current state of the wedding photography industry? Where do you think wedding photography is headed in the years to come?

In Italy a lack of professionalism has invaded the wedding photography industry, some photographers consider weddings only as a business opportunity and present themselves without the specific required skills. That behavior ruins the reputation of reliable skilled professionals. I think providing truly professional service and products is rewarding in the long term.

Justin Graddy, Graddy Photography, Minneapolis, St. Paul Wedding Photographer
Website: Graddy Photography | Email: graddyphotography@yahoo.com | Phone: (952)649-0529

How did you get your start and why did you chose wedding photography as a career?

I have always admired photography but never knew how to get into the business, so I stopped wondering why or how and dove in head first 5 years ago and let things fall into place as they may. I just knew that if I applied myself 100% mind, body, & soul that everything would work out.

How has your extensive experience in wedding photography helped you in difficult circumstances on a wedding day?

Wedding day stress. If you’re not confident it will show and it is contagious. If I was running around like a chicken with its head cut off panicking, I can promise you that it will show in the photos. Every single one of my clients knows that I am a confident and seasoned professional. When I walk into a room I am calm and ready for a great day!

Lakeville Minneapolis Saint Paul Minnesota Wedding Photographer Justin Graddy

What are some of your favorite local venues?

Semple Mansion, Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church – HAUMC, MN Boat Club

What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

Go with a professional if you really care about professional shots. Also, find someone you are comfortable with and can relate to.

Lakeville Minneapolis Saint Paul Minnesota Wedding Photographer Justin Graddy

What’s your favorite part of the wedding day to photograph?

I love the anticipation and emotion of the getting ready time of day.

What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

Backyard weddings are always intimate and full of emotion and great ambiance.

Lakeville Minneapolis Saint Paul Minnesota Wedding Photographer Justin Graddy

What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

Risk Vs. Reward. Follow and trust me, it will be worth it and they will be your favorite photos. Be yourselves and have fun with it.

What do you find is the biggest challenge in wedding photography?

Anticipating the next unexpected moment and not being hard on myself if I miss it because I know that there will be other great moments throughout the day.

Lakeville Minneapolis Saint Paul Minnesota Wedding Photographer Justin Graddy

What do you do for fun when you’re not shooting weddings?

Travel abroad, stomp around Europe, create visually stunning art, spending quality time with my wife, and catch up with family and friends.

How would you describe your style of photography?

Cutting-edge, exclusive, and passionate.

Lakeville Minneapolis Saint Paul Minnesota Wedding Photographer Justin Graddy

How would you describe the current state of the wedding photography industry? Where do you think wedding photography is headed in the years to come?

I think you need to have passion, good work ethic, and an unrelenting willingness to succeed and do the very best you can to be a contender in this field. I think that if your heart is not in it, you are going to have a tough time. I am thankful every day that I love what I do. Of course the field is being flooded with AMPHOGS ( amateur photographers) and we hear a lot of horror stories from clients who say their “sister” or “cousin” used “the other guy” and the pictures turned out horrible. We don’t ask the name of the photographer, we just ask, “ Well, were they professionals?” The answer is always the same.

Lakeville Minneapolis Saint Paul Minnesota Wedding Photographer Justin Graddy

What do you use for inspiration?

Color theory books, fine art photography books. I try to see how they incorporate light, color, shutter speed, etc. to create stunning visual art.

Have you found any products, services, or seminars that have made a difference to your photography or your business?

I wish. I find many that I would benefit from but many of the seminars and workshops I find are held on Saturdays. Come on man, I am shooting weddings every Saturday.

Lakeville Minneapolis Saint Paul Minnesota Wedding Photographer Justin Graddy

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

Don’t ever half-ass anything. My dad used to always tell me that especially when it came to cleaning the garage. If I cleaned the garage half-ass, then I would have to do it again until it was right. I apply this to every aspect of my daily life, tackle it head-on and leave no room for excuses because in the end if you aren’t true to yourself, your only cheating yourself. I still hate cleaning the garage though.

What would you say was the biggest reason for your success?

You only live once and you have to make the most out of every day.

Lakeville Minneapolis Saint Paul Minnesota Wedding Photographer Justin Graddy

What future plans do you have for your business for the next year?

I want to create my own brand of art that is exclusive only to my studio. This business is a lively adventure every single day and that’s what makes it so exciting; that I never know where I’ll be a year from now, or for that matter, even a month or week from now. I do know that success breeds success.

Brazil Wedding Photographer Vinicius Matos | La Foto | ISPWP Spotlight Interview

Vinicius Matos Bio:
Brazil wedding photographer Vinicus Matos is a 33 year old photographer who has been in the wedding industry since 2005. He has won national and international wedding photography awards, the most recent of which was the prestigious ISPWP Photographer of the Quarter (Summer 2009).

Contact Information:
Vinicius Matos, La Foto, Belo Horizonte, Brazil Wedding Photographer
Website: La Foto | Email: contato@viniciusmatos.com | Phone: 55312 3286-1106

How did you get your start and why did you chose wedding photography as a career?

Well, I fell in love with photography in 2002 when I was 26 years old, after a nervous break down. The doctor encouraged me to find a hobby so I decided to get my first basic SLR camera (Rebel 2000). As soon as I got it I started shooting some close up and macro photography just for fun, but some technical barriers prevented me to go to the next level. Then I decided to start studying photography in Brazil.

At that time, I was in charge of marketing for a large building company and I had to manage my career in business and marketing as well as being a photography student. Then I decided to open a franchise School of Photography in my city in Brazil, Belo Horizonte which has 2.5 million people in the Brazilian southeast. I owned a school but I wasn’t a pro photographer. This is really funny isn’t it? The business started growing and I had to quit my job. At that time, it was a tough decision but I decided not to go on with my primary job and keep photography as my way of living.

In 2005 I had a chance to photograph my first wedding. A foreign couple was about to get married in Brazil and decided to look for a photographer only 2 days before the wedding. A friend of mine referred me but I was quite nervous. Then my wife Ana told me not to lose the opportunity since it was good money. After that night I never stopped shooting weddings. It’s all I want to do in photography right now. I just love doing it!

Fotografia de Casamento, Fotografia de Boda, Brazil Wedding Photographer Vinicius Matos, La Foto

What are some of your favorite local venues?

I really like the beach weddings. Especially in Brazil where we have plenty of beautiful places like this I enjoy shooting during the day time. Most of our weddings here happen at night so we do not have natural light. Can you imagine that?

What’s your favorite part of the wedding day to photograph?

I have no favorite part at all. I would say that during the preparation I`m usually looking for excitement and anxiety. I love ceremonies where people cry and parties full of good vibes with people dancing and this is not difficult to see in Brazil.

Fotografia de Casamento, Fotografia de Boda, Brazil Wedding Photographer Vinicius Matos, La Foto

What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

There is one thing that I love, when the couple come to me and say that I’m free to do whatever I feel like. It’s all about trust. It really inspires me.

What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

Well, they have to trust their photographers in the first place. It’s also important to relax and act naturally. These are good tips if they have hired experienced wedding photographers.

What do you find is the biggest challenge in wedding photography?

Being alert all the time so we don’t miss the important moments!

Fotografia de Casamento, Fotografia de Boda, Brazil Wedding Photographer Vinicius Matos, La Foto

Do you do “destination weddings?”

Yes! I love them since we have a chance to travel to places I have never been. It’s awesome!

What do you do for fun when you’re not shooting weddings?

I play paintball, read business books and I travel a lot.

Fotografia de Casamento, Fotografia de Boda, Brazil Wedding Photographer Vinicius Matos, La Foto

How would you describe your style of photography?

I don’t like to put labels and define myself as a PJ wedding photographer or as a traditional wedding photographer. I would say I like to understand the couple that hired me and start chasing emotion and feelings. I’m not so fond of posing photography but sometimes I cannot shoot without posing them. I’d rather be known as a wedding photographer that emphasizes feelings, the big day and that respects the style of the couple.

What do you think you offer to clients that is unique?

Emotion. It’s all about emotion during the wedding day!

Fotografia de Casamento, Fotografia de Boda, Brazil Wedding Photographer Vinicius Matos, La Foto

Do you offer albums? If so, describe the albums you offer and why you think it’s important to provide albums.

Yes, I never book a wedding without an album sold since I could not see my work delivered on a DVD. I use 2 local companies, Fotolab and Digipix. My design is not outsourced since it’s part of our core competency. We have 2 exclusive designers.

How would you describe the current state of the wedding photography industry? Where do you think wedding photography is headed in the years to come?

Our industry keeps growing but I’ve seen a lot of new photographers getting in. I feel happy about it but at the same time I think they should know that being a wedding photographer is not just about owning good equipment.

Fotografia de Casamento, Fotografia de Boda, Brazil Wedding Photographer Vinicius Matos, La Foto

What do you use for inspiration?

Music, PJ photographers, cinema and art books.

Have you found any products, services, or seminars that have made a difference to your photography or your business?

Sure, WPPI. They are going to celebrate their 30th anniversary now in Las Vegas. I’ll be there again. It’s worth it since you can get connected with the biggest photographers of our industry and also learn a lot from them.

Fotografia de Casamento, Fotografia de Boda, Brazil Wedding Photographer Vinicius Matos, La Foto

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

Don’t try to get into the wedding photography industry if you don’t love weddings!

What would you say was the biggest reason for your success?

I never sleep! I’m kidding! I trust in my work and I’ve always tried to do my best for my clients!

What future plans do you have for your business for the next year?

I intend to shoot 40 weddings. 33 are already booked. I need to spend more time with my family and with myself!

Denver Wedding Photographer Kern-Photo | ISPWP Spotlight Interview

Denver wedding photographer R. J. Kern recently placed 5th overall in the ISPWP Fall 2009 Wedding Photography Contest. In this ISPWP interview we find out all sorts of interesting information about R. J., including a unique lighting technique he uses, and how his dogs Dash and Stella got their names.

R. J. Kern Bio:
R. J. Kern is an award-winning Wedding Photographer in Denver, Colorado and is and one part of Kern-Photo, a husband & wife wedding photographer team. By balancing emotion with dynamic energy, we approach wedding photography with visual clarity and a thoughtful appreciation of light. We take a fresh approach to photography using a blend of candid photojournalism, modern portraiture, and fun, real-moment photography.

Contact Information:
R. J. Kern, Kern-Photo, Denver, Colorado
website: Kern-Photo | email: rj@kern-photo.com | phone: (303) 474-0983

How did you get your start and why you chose wedding photography as a career?

I’ve been an art class junkie since high school, taking 14 semesters of art and discovery photography my junior year. My parents were very supportive of my following my passion, and it just took me awhile to find it. In college, I continued to study art in a more formal sense, but also found interest in environmental geography. I graduated from Colgate University in upstate New York with dual degrees: Art & Art History and Environmental Geography. I enjoyed bridging the gap between the two distinct disciplines of art & geography.

I began an internship at National Geographic Society which started literally the day after graduation and that changed my world. I was exposed to work-class photographers at the National Geographic Society and not only got a chance to meet them, but see behind the scenes how they worked. I worked in the Map division of the National Geography Society for five years during which I completed my MA in geography from University of Colorado-Boulder. During that time, I was encourage by several National Geographic photographers, along with my news editor, David Braun, to pursue with my passion of photography with intent and did so from what started as a hobby and turned into a profitable business propelled by an invitation by a few friends to shoot their weddings. I did a stellar job, then when Nicole and I got married I REALLY saw the joy in weddings and have been hooked ever since.

Denver Wedding Photographer Kern-Photo

How has your extensive experience in wedding photography helped you in difficult circumstances on a wedding day?

Wedding Photographers wear many hats and I love the variety of shooting emotion, portraits, landscapes, and details all within the confines of a single day. Despite bad weather, stressful family situations, or anything else that could go wrong on the wedding day, being surrounded by awesome people in love puts everything into perspective, creates this white hot flame of focus and gives me the courage to create. Being a versatile photographer among the most important components of success of this industry, especially when there is pressure to create something out of nothing with little time and resources.

Tell us about some of the more unique weddings you’ve shot.

Some of our favorite weddings have been held in parents’ backyards (Think: “Father of the Bride”). Emotionally, there’s a sentiment of place that is important to the bride and groom, an intimacy filled with warmth and humanity in being in a familiar place. Practically, this puts people at ease, and generally there are less time constraints and a larger budget for photography. With the current state of the economy, there is a movement of people getting married into sentimentally-important places like a backyard or mountain top and choosing to spend their money on quality vendors.

Denver Wedding Photographer Kern-Photo

What are some of your favorite local venues?

Our top three mountain wedding venues where we’ve photographed weddings include the Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch (Beaver Creek, CO), The Club at Cordillera (Vail, CO), and the Steamboat Grand in (Steamboat Springs, CO). Those venues boast a genuine sense of place and killer scenery that make me want to live there.

What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

Hire a photographer first, and their work second. Before you resonate with their work, you have like them as a person and like the way they make you feel. If you don’t get along with your photographer, or your photographer doesn’t get along with family, disaster may happen. Look for versatility in their work, especially their ability to make ordinary locations extraordinary through their use of light, composition, and way they can help bring out your emotion. Ask for testimonials and don’t be afraid to ask to see several completed albums or even proof work. Anyone can post a few great images, but good work on a consistent basis is a true sign of a professional wedding photographer.

What’s your favorite part of the wedding day to photograph?

Bride and Groom together time. That’s when magic happens and emotions connect in a real sense.

Denver Wedding Photographer Kern-Photo

What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

Quirky and intimate weddings that showcase the personality of the bride AND groom.

What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

Consider a morning wedding. We did and it gave us more time to be together during our wedding day. Plus we love brunch. Consider a First Look. Be yourself. Don’t forget to eat your cake. Don’t be afraid to Delegate. Face the crowd during the ceremony. Know there are rules and rules to be broken in wedding tradition, just know the difference. Avoid the receiving line. Don’t experiment with makeup. Be comfy. Finally, plan alone time. I blogged about this not long ago.

Specifically, what do you do to ensure a wedding will go smoothly?

We make sure we have all of the information on our “info overload” sheet with is 20+ questions completed at least two weeks prior to the wedding, with details such as addresses, times, names, and situations we should be aware of. We also are provided with info to all the other vendors and will contact them and ask them what we can do to help their do their job better on the wedding day. We also have several “signature” lighting techniques that do not rely on available light that we can pull out anyplace, anytime, with a guaranteed awesome image.

Denver Wedding Photographer Kern-Photo

Most photographers look for soft diffuse light. How do you work with hard light?

Love it, don’t hate it. Leading/perspective lines are created by hard light and using perspective goes a long way to guide the viewers eye toward the subject. Have the client close their eyes and feel the warmth of the sun, especially when it is cold is can be relaxing. Hard light has a distinct look, and if you know how to use it, there is really no need for fast lenses or expensive lighting equipment.

What do you do for customer service that makes you stand out?

I return all calls and emails within 24 hours. We have several little “surprises” that every wedding clients receives and loves. We don’t have template email responses and individually tailor all of our correspondence to keep things real. We also strive to under-promise and over-deliver, which might mean we may give them some additional time coverage, invite an additional photographer, or include additional pages to their album at no cost. Those little things create value which clients love.

How important is it to hire an experienced wedding photographer?

Like anything else, you get what you pay for. Lesser experienced photographers often don’t understand the importance of good business practices, duplicate back-up camera gear, off-site data storage, good insurance, and bullet-proof contracts. Without these things in place, it’s not “if” something will go wrong, but “when.” Photographers Toolkit and John Harrington’s “Best Business Practices for Photographers” are good resources.

Denver Wedding Photographer Kern-Photo

What do you find is the biggest challenge in wedding photography?

The biggest challenge is setting and maintaining high standards in the industry. The influx of new talent keeps everyone on their toes to stay abreast of changing technologies and techniques, which rocks and keeps creativity alive. Wedding photography holds enormous potential for creative people who have never picked up a camera. In five years, they’ll be among the ones that will shake the industry by storm, invigorating creativity with a ripple-effect.

What do you do for fun when you’re not shooting weddings?

My wife and I love to ski and snowboard and head to the dog park with our Hungarian Vizsla, Dash, and French Bulldog, Stella.

Interesting names! What are the significance of your pet’s names?

“Dash” is actually a part of our business name, Kern-Photo, and Stella is the coffee shop in Denver where Nicole and I met.

Denver Wedding Photographer Kern-Photo

How would you describe your style of photography?

While “Fresh. Modern. Fun” appears on our business card, it’s much more than that…. I would describe my style of photography to be rather PG13 with an edgy flair, totally real with a gregarious spirit, clean and crisp, creative light and color, respect for tradition, and intuitive on when it’s appropriate to break the rules. And formals can be fun and exciting, despite the mindset of even some “new school” photographers.

What do you think you offer to clients that is unique?

My enthusiasm is contagious and I involve my clients in my work as much as possible. When I’m excited, they are excited. That positive experience is what they remember in their photos. I lightpaint bridal parties all the time and involve them in the process, which they totally dig. My friends know me as the “Macgyver” of creative lighting.

That’s something we don’t see many photographers doing. Why do you lightpaint?

I get to leave a bit of enthusiasm in each photo, kind of like a signature, but only with light. Not only do I get to run around and play, but there are so many uncalculated “happy mistakes” that make photography so dynamic, like strays of light, color juxtapositions, or odd compositional elements.

Denver Wedding Photographer Kern-Photo

How long are most of your exposures?

Most of my lightpaintings are between about 10-30 seconds in duration. The cool thing about sitting still for that time, is you can actually remember what you were feeling and thinking while the shutter was open, which you can’t do in 1/250 sec as easily. Towards the end of the reception when I’ll bust out the technique, wedding clients dig the thoughtful time in a big way. The few minutes they get alone is a refreshing escape from the dance floor vibe.

Do you offer albums? If so, describe the albums you offer and why you think it’s important to provide albums.

You bet. We’ve used Graphistudio albums since day one. Albums are an important part of remembering the wedding day that will still be cherished in 50 years. In our wedding, we were handed a DVD of all of our images. It was just so anti-climatic to have all the memories of such an important day on a single disk. It took us over three years to design our album. You know what they say, “the cobblers kid’s have no shoes.” Also, from a selfish perspective, albums make our images shine far better than a computer screen or a small print. The extra work is worth it to have our best work shared by our brides to all their friends.

What do you use for inspiration?

Since we primarily shoot on location, the connection we have with clients and that shared experience is the most important for inspiration. Second to that, a sense of place remains paramount. As a card-toting geographer, I get lost all the time. I assure my wife, “We’re not lost… we’re just exploring.”

Place has the power to shape people, depending if you are on a sitting on a beach or the floor of a parking garage or standing in the middle of a busy street or on top of a mountain. There are so many dynamic natural elements like temperature, wind, light, color, vegetation, that offer limitless sources of inspiration. Studio lighting techniques used in cinema or magazines, gets me thinking on a whole other level.

Denver Wedding Photographer Kern-Photo

Have you found any products, services, or seminars that have made a difference to your photography or your business?

Outsourcing some of our business tasks remains an important part of our business, so we can stay focused on doing what we do best. We love to do business with friends. We have a web programmer, a graphic designer, a marketing guru, an accountant, that all do a terrific job. We have partnered with Pictage to streamline our print fulfillment.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

My parents encouraged me to follow my passion and not let what others think deter me. They told me, “Follow your passion and don’t let what others think deter you.”

What would you say was the biggest reason for your success?

Having a day job for the first few years of getting started in our business allowed me to take some risks in developing my style, allowed me to attend workshops, take time away to travel, and pursue continuing education without feeling a pinch. It allowed me to purchase the necessary creative tools to do the job right, gave me the time to build up my clientele and networks, and allowed me to turn away jobs that I just didn’t want to do. Plus, it gave me a great opportunity to travel the country and photograph different people in different places with little risk to my own business. We’ve never taken out a business loan or gone in debt and we are proud of that. Also, paid vacations and holidays rock.

Denver Wedding Photographer Kern-Photo

Have you taken any workshops or seminars that you would recommend to others?

Anything by John Michael Cooper, Jerry Ghionis, or the Boutwell’s Anti-Workshop… they all offer their hearts, their patience, and a great deal of inspiration for your creative and business needs. Jared Platt, Dane Sanders, Melissa Jill, Steve Stanton, and Laurence Kim are phenomenal photography coaches as well. I’m stoked to attend Jeff Newsom’s ULTRAMAGEDDON in January 2010.

Do you follow any photography or business blogs that you would recommend?

If I had to list my top three, I would say: The Strobist, Chase Jarvis, and John Michael Cooper.

1. How did you get your start and why you chose to do wedding photography?

I started wedding photography like most people, shooting a family member’s wedding for free. I got a buzz out of the pressure involved which really drove me to become better.

2. How has your extensive experience in wedding photography helped you in difficult circumstances on a wedding day?

Weddings can sometimes be tricky events to manage. I shoot all of my weddings alone and so I’ve learned to rely on help from the Best Man and Groomsman. The most difficult time for me is the formal images, trying to get everyone together can be difficult and so that’s why I always ask the Best Man, or close family member for some help. This allows me to get through the formal images quickly and efficiently.

3. Tell us about some of the more unique weddings you’ve shot.

I have shot weddings all over the UK, the largest being a 500 guest Asian wedding and the smallest being just 2 people who hired a whole castle for the day. Both were amazing, but different experiences.

4. What advice would you give a bride who is looking for a wedding photographer?

I often get asked why my potential clients should choose me to be their photographer. It’s a tricky question, but I always judge myself on my latest wedding. I am very critical of my images and always strive to take a better image, and I think that comes across when I talk to my brides. Consistency is a key factor in choosing your photographer, but so is flair. Some of my favourite photographers , both wedding and non-wedding, take images that I have to look at twice to understand where or how they achieved the shot. So consistency is good, but so is a few unusual, “different” shots.

5. What kinds of weddings do you love to photograph?

I love to photograph weddings where the Bride and Groom have complete faith in what I do, and give me free reign to document their special day through my eyes. From my favourite part of the day, the Bridal Prep, through to the first dance, being able to express yourself as a photographer for someone on the biggest day of their life is a true honour.

6. What are your top tips for brides to help them get great photos on their wedding day?

For me to capture images that reflect my couple I need to get close to them. I interact personally with as many people as I can at a wedding, it’s key for me that the Bride and Groom and their guests feel completely comfortable in my company. If they are wary of the photographer then he/she will never get images that truly reflect those people.

7. Do clients ask you to travel for Destination Wedding? How to do you handle shooting a wedding at a venue you’ve never seen before?

Traveling for weddings is not so much an issue for us in the UK, as most wedding destinations are reachable by car or a short plane trip. Of course I do a lot of wedding photography in London and around the UK so I’m familiar with all of the popular venues. However, the venue, whilst important, should not be a deal breaker if the photographer has not shot there before. Experienced professional wedding photographers should be able to shoot a wedding at a venue they have not seen before. In fact for me its a real joy to shoot weddings at a place that I have not seen before. I find it keeps the adrenalin pumping and makes me look for shots, as opposed to having a pre-defined list of shots and places in my head.

Wedding are great events to be part of, it’s hard work and whilst we are only visible for the day there is a lot of work that goes on in the background, in the studio and office.

I’m proud to be part of an organization such as the ISPWP that is striving to highlight great photography and great photographers.
