Wedding Photography Trends in Russia and the World

In 2008, after a terrible worldwide economic crisis, many owners of “SLR” entry-level cameras decided that shooting weddings would be a great way to earn extra money.

This eventually led to a glut of inexperienced wedding photographers, along with the inevitable lowering of image quality for clients. This in turn led to a drop in the level of trust and confidence in the profession of wedding photography. Professional level photography cannot be learned overnight. Photography is a craft! – A craft that can be learned only with hard work over a long time.

Plus the level of investment is more significant that most amateurs realize. A true professional needs to have at least 2 pro-level camera bodies, 5-6 professional quality lenses from a wide angle for shooting large groups of people in confined spaces to telephoto for distance and portrait shots, not to mention professional lighting equipment (and even more backup gear). And if you add all of the necessary high-end computer equipment plus software, the investment is at least $10,000 USD. Not to mention the fact that a true professional attends ongoing education and workshops, has years of experience, spends many nights looking at photos of other internationally recognized photographers to learn new techniques in shooting and in post-processing, and devotes time to develop his or her own unique style of shooting.

Any wedding involves much more than simply shooting the images, which is only 5-10% of the total time spent on the preparation of the final wedding album. There is also a significant amount of time needed for post-processing which can take many weeks of work for each wedding. Given all of the above – you can expect the minimum amount which a truly professional photographer charges will be least $1500-2000 for about 6 hours of coverage. Top experienced photographers may charge many times that amount.

Now let us turn to the very special day of the wedding. There are two main trends in wedding photography.

First, there is the traditional approach, where the photographer takes charge and spends a lot of time directing everyone on the wedding day. The pictures turn out about the same from wedding to wedding so there is consistency in quality, but there is a loss of emotion and spontaneous moments. The bride and groom are periodically taken from their guests for posed portrait sessions. To avoid this, it is possible to arrange for posed portrait sessions either before or after the wedding day so you can spend more time with your guests.

Second, there is the photojournalist approach where the photographer concentrates on shooting the story of the day as it happens, unscripted and unposed. This approach helps you remember the genuine feeling of the day and you can see the moments and emotions which happen and are gone in a second, never to be repeated. There is still a short amount of time devoted for the regular portraits and group shots, and they can be seen as an organic part of the magical story of your day.

Do not misunderstand me – I do not mind posing my brides and grooms at all – I do that all the time. But if you want a large selection of beautiful photos taken in your wedding dress then make the effort and spend a day with a good photographer and makeup artist. But do not do it on the wedding day because on the wedding day you don’t have a lot of time and there is no chance for re-shoots.

This is something that is already being done in the advanced markets of the U.S. and Britain and other countries in Europe, and will soon come to us in Russia (I know this first hand after a conversation with a representative of the magazine “Bride in England”). Use the wedding day for the photojournalism approach, and take a second day for the staged posed portraits. You do not necessarily need to book a photographer for the whole day of your wedding – just a few hours at the most interesting moments. With this approach you can completely enjoy the wedding day and get great and memorable photos, and later without having to worry about the dress you can pursue your wildest photo dreams and can even swim in a pool with the wedding dress or take other shots that you would never take on your wedding day.

We now turn to the issue of cooperation at the wedding between the bride, groom and photographer. If you choose your favorite photographer, you should trust him completely, or you will find yourself in a situation similar to the patient on the operating table giving advice to the surgeon on how to carry out the operation. The happier and more positive you are – the better the photographs will turn out. Removing some of the common shortcomings of a photo is much easier than to correct the spoiled mood caused by worries about whatever is happening at the wedding.

The conclusion is simple – choose a professional and trust him, be positive and enjoy the great moments of your wedding which you’ll be telling your grandchildren. This is the best way to get the results you desire.

How to Get Great Wedding Reception Lighting For Your Wedding Photos

Wedding reception lighting is an important consideration for couples that are getting married at an indoor venue, at night, or both! Lighting is an important factor for setting the atmosphere and expectation for your guests of the great party that lays ahead. Once of the most unflattering light is overhead fluorescent lighting found in some venues. It’s worth spending the time to research if your venue, DJ, event rental company, or lighting specialist can provide lighting for your event.

LED Lighting

Newer low powered LED uplighting is the way to go these days. Many LED uplights are able to synchronize with the DJ’s music like the ones found at night clubs or concerts. Unlike older incandescent uplighting, LED uplighting can be controlled to change color. So at different portions of the reception, you can transition the lighting to suit the mood. For example, your first dance could be a subdued cooler color, and then during open dancing on a packed dance floor the cooler could be warmer intense. Some venues, such as 7 Degrees in Laguna Beach, California, are equipped with modern stage lighting throughout the reception area and can be controlled much like you would see at a live concert.

Hey, I’m Didn’t Get Married in a Cave!

An experienced wedding photographer will be able to balance the ambient lighting of the venue with camera flash directed on to the subject. Bad reception photos will often look as if your reception took place in a dark cave and show none of hard work that went into designing the ambiance of the event. It’s important to review your photographer’s portfolio or ask he or she to show you reception photos to make sure they are experienced with taking well lit photos in low light.

Death by Laser

Lastly, another important consideration is find out if your DJ, band, or lighting specialist is using laser lighting. Nothing looks more distracting than seeing a green laser dot on the bride or groom’s face in their “First Dance” photos. These laser spots can often be fixed in Photoshop, but may take some time to fix (read: $$$). It’s best to check with your photographer. From personal experience, it can take an hour or more fixing unflattering green/red/blue laser spots on a couple’s faces for a first dance photo. Laser lights can be a great visual effect, but ask your DJ or lighting specialist to save that for later when the dance floor is packed.

The Essential Guide to Wedding Albums

When you first gets engaged, there is so much excitement, preparation and planning. Once you sit down to put together a budget, one of the big questions that comes up is how to divvy up funds. What are the priorities? For a lot of couples, photography is a big priority. But within that category, there are so many options for what you get. This article will hopefully give you insight into one of the major discussions: “Do I need a wedding album? And if so, what kind?”

Every photographer you meet with will have a different business philosophy and a different product line of albums. Here is a list of the most common options that wedding photographers offer:

Disc But No Album

The first question is, do you get an album or not? For people who are scrapbookers, who think that they will be able to make their own album, or have a friend who is a graphic designer (or a photographer), this may seem like an attractive choice; and it may absolutely be the best fit for you. A big caution is that if you only have a disc of images, you don’t have anything tangible. Yes, you can print images from your disc, but you may never get around to it. And pros will have access to the best labs where your prints will be created on archival quality paper to last for generations. You may scrapbook or make your own wedding album, but there are even wedding photographers who haven’t been able to find the time to make albums from their own weddings, so make sure you actually have time to devote to a project of that size! Also, professional album companies only sell to professionals so you will be limited to consumer-grade books which are generally lower quality and not as durable. If this is not the best option for you, keep reading for some information about different types of albums.

Proof Albums vs. Wedding Albums

Please make sure that you understand what your photographer is giving you when they offer you a “proof” album. Proof albums will contain just that: proofs. Proofs are all of the final images from your wedding without editing/retouching, in a small format so that you can see and have a paper copy of all of the images on your disc. It may have the images numbers listed below each picture. Proof books may have a number of pictures printed on a paper page, or they may be the kind where you slip 4×6 prints into plastic sleeves. They are normally used for you to pick the final pictures you want to be edited and retouched in your final album.

Matted/Traditional Wedding Albums

These are a more traditional style of album where archival quality photographs are hand-mounted into a book, and surrounded by a matte (similar to a picture frame where a thick paper matte frames a photograph). Modern album companies offer custom shaped mattes which give versatility to the album design. A difference from the flush-mount style is that the image cannot stretch directly to the edge of the page since there needs to be a matte around each image.

Magazine Style / FLush-Mount / Coffee Table Books

These are generally the highest quality books. This style of album is digitally designed, and the final product is a hard cover book. Companies offer hand-stitched leather binding, metal, or wood covers. There is no matte around the photos, rather the photos are printed directly onto the page, which allow designs to go from edge-to-edge. The pages are usually thick (similar to the thickness of children’s books with cardboard pages, but with high quality photographic paper). The biggest thing to watch for with these is the center gutter – check to see if there is a break or gap in the photograph if it crosses two pages, or if photos can seamlessly go across the center to have one photo take up an entire 2-page spread. Your album may have more versatility of design if your photographer can design across the center gutter. Here’s a great article by a bride who was thrilled with her flush mount album.

Press Books

Press books are also digitally designed. Some are lay-flat (pages do just that, lay flat) like the coffee table books, others are not, and are similar to a novel where there is a deep join between pages, content can get lost in there if images cross the two pages. These albums have thin pages, using photographic paper. Often they have hard covers with photos that wrap around the whole cover, other companies offer materials like silks and suedes that can match the colours of your wedding. Some press books are soft cover as well. The quality of the images is generally quite high, but press books use different printing processes and equipment than the traditional and flush mount albums, and some would argue they have lower image quality.

Pages vs. Sides vs. Spreads

Photographers use different language when explaining their albums. Some photographers talk about pages, and some talk about sides, which are essentially the same thing. Think about a book. You open the front cover, and on the right hand side is page one. Some albums start on the left and some start on the right. Either way, pages/sides are counted as pages in a book. When you open your album to a particular page, the two pages you are viewing together make up a spread. Make sure you are clear about what your photographer offers and at what price. A 20 page album for $2000 is a lot different than a 20 spread album for $2000. Remember to check if your photographer charges per image or per page. Some even charge a flat fee for the album no matter how many pages or images it has.

Large vs. Small

Books range from teeny tiny fit-in-your-purse size to hefty albums you can barely lift off your bookshelf, or even multi-volume sets. Decide on what will work best for your lifestyle. If you move a lot, or live in a small space, a lighter album will be a better option for you. If you want a durable heirloom, a large leather-bound album might be the best choice.

Design Style

Every couple will find a photographer that will fit their personal style. Part of what will determine who you should choose for your photographer is the style of album that the photographer offers. Do you like the vintage look, a mix of black and white/colour, sloppy borders, random layouts, faded background photos, or clean and classic? Make sure to pick a photographer that fits well with your style. Keep in mind that this album will be a family heirloom for generations – ask yourself how, in 20 years, a particular trend or fad will look your album. Any professional wedding photographer should be able to show you multiple example albums, so be sure to look at their album designs closely to make sure they match your style.

Pre-Design vs. Choosing the Photos

The design of the album is in the hands of the photographer, but ultimately it can be up to you. Check to see if your photographer wants you to choose all of the images for them, or if they will do a pre-design for you. If your photographer offers a pre-design, you may have final approval to swap or change photos, and it can save you a lot of time. If you choose all of the images yourself, you and your new spouse will both need to set aside time after the wedding to go through the images together and choose the ones you like best. This is a good choice if you know that you are (to put it bluntly) very picky and if you have a lot of time. Keep in mind that your photographer has a lot of album design experience that you can draw on when choosing the photos.

Parent Albums

Many album companies offer options for parent albums. For instance maybe you will have a large leather flush-mount album but you want smaller duplicate press books for your parents. Ask your photographer what options they offer for parent albums. It’s a great gift to say thank you for their love, support, and guidance. And you won’t have to keep lending your album to your parents!

Whatever the best choice is for you, make sure you are clear on all of the options your photographer offers and what will be included.

5 Survival Tips for Winter Wedding and Engagement Photos

Countless couples choose to get married throughout the winter months and enjoy the advantage of the off-season discounts, greater venue and vendor availability, less expensive honeymoons and the multitude of seasonal decoration ideas. Many also favor bundling up for their engagement portraits to capture the winter wonderland that awaits them outdoors.

Here are a few tips to making the most of your winter wedding and engagement photographs:

1. Adjust the Schedule to Have More Daylight
After daylights savings takes effect in October, outdoor photographs may become challenging as it tends to get darker sooner. It typically gets darker during the day so it’s best to plan your ceremony earlier if you would like to plan to get photos outdoors and aren’t planning on seeing one another before your service. It’s best to arrange for your ceremony to conclude by 2pm if you would like to capture family portraits indoors while still having reasonable time to capture photos outside. Likewise, engagement photos should be captured in the morning or early afternoon to catch the best sunlight.

2. Remember That Bad Weather = Bad Traffic
Leave extra time for travel. Reduced visibility combined with wet or snow-covered roads may create slower travel times than initially anticipated. Allowing for extra travel time will make your day less stressful because you will be less rushed and will feel secure in knowing everyone will arrive safely. If your wedding day arrives and the weather is perfect you will have additional time for more photos or time to freshen up before greeting guests during cocktails.

3. Dress for the Worst Weather Case Scenario
Treat your feet to winter boots and bring an extra pair of socks just in case. The bride’s dress, combined with the snow on the ground, will cover her boots in photos. Choosing to not wear boots will shorten the amount of time spent outdoors and potentially ruin your formal footwear. A pair of sweatpants can be worn under a dress to keep ladies legs warm. Shawls or wraps can be created to match your existing bridal gowns and will help keep necks, backs, arms and hands warm. Matching mittens, hats and scarves are a creative way to bundle up in winter and look fashionable in your photos. Don’t forget an umbrella in case snow turns to sleet or rain. When your portraits are finished, enjoy thermoses of eggnog, spiced wine or hot chocolate with family and friends.

4. Engagement Sessions Locations – Look for Public Decorations and Lights
Look for locations that feature dramatic holiday light displays to create a colorful ambiance in your photos. Some public parks and zoos cater to the holiday crowds by providing enchanting illuminations. Train stations often decorate for the holidays and allow for fun photos featuring holiday shoppers passing in a blur of motion with bags in hand.

5. Wedding Location Ideas
The intimate warmth of a historic mansion or a charming Bed & Breakfast can provide a great backdrop for your wedding with a roaring fire in the background for family photos. If you’re looking to capturing portraits outdoors consider a location that would allow you to also move inside quickly if the weather becomes unbearable. Conservatories with outdoor gardens often provide indoor locations within a short walk. Choosing from these locations for your reception may add the extra money-saving advantage of including seasonal decorations at no additional cost. Hotels often provide spectacular holiday displays featuring Christmas trees, wreaths and garland. These are often featured in their lobby where guests check in and out so seek permission to capture portraits in these spaces and assure there are no plans for large conventions or other corporate parties that may hinder your ability to create portraits without patrons in the background of your photos.

Lately I’ve noticed a new trend emerging in wedding photography. Many couples are opting to spend more time with their wedding guests by taking their wedding portraits at night after the reception or during the dinner hour.

If you have guests coming in from all over the world – or the country – you’ll want to spend as much time as possible with them. Taking a one or two hour break in the middle of the day to have portraits taken means less time with everyone. Often, if a wedding is in the middle of the afternoon the sun is too bright for flattering portraits (think squinting, sweating or the dreaded shadow in the eyes) so I’ve been particularly excited to hear couples actually request an after-reception, night-time portrait shoot.

Digital camera technology has improved so much that photographers can photograph very dark places with far less grain than we used to see in film days. Photographers are now able to achieve a more cinematic look with low levels of ambient light, even in dark settings.

This year alone I’ve had several couples decide to head out for 30 minutes or so after the reception is over and have their portraits taken around the city or the reception venue site. We still did the traditional wedding party and family formal photographs after the ceremony, but this never takes too long and you can catch everyone while they’re still at the event. Then, we saved the creative portraits of the couple for the end of the night. These particular couples weren’t big drinkers and they spent a few minutes freshening up before the photo shoot began.

Some couples have wanted to let loose and party during the reception, so for those cases we headed out between dinner courses for some quick post-sunset night shots, which are also just as dramatic.

Not all venue lighting is created equal, so if you’re interested in this kind of late night photography it always pays for your photographer to do a little bit of research to make sure it’s going to work (or that your photographer has the right equipment to light the scene in the dark).

All brides want wonderful pictures of their wedding day. Here are five easy tips for better wedding photos.

1) Avoid Looking at the Camera (Unless your photographer asks you to)
Have you ever wondered why you don’t see actors looking directly into the camera in the movies? One of the reasons is to give the impression that the camera is “invisible.” So, watching a movie is like seeing all the action without being noticed. Not looking to the photographer will yield more natural-looking pictures.

2) Smile More
The moment you’ve always dreamt of has finally arrived and you may be really anxious. Sometimes it’s good to take a deep breath and relax. Many brides spend the whole time at their ceremony with a serious expression. You want beautiful photos, don’t you? You want to look gorgeous, don’t you? It’s simple. Simply smile more. Let go of all the stress and planning. Smile while you’re walking down the aisle and during the whole ceremony. Relax, enjoy the day and really try to enjoy each moment. Oh! It’s good if your husband is all smiles also, right?

3) Show Off Your Love
Do you want to know one thing that EVERY wedding photographer likes? Wedding photographers like couples who interact with each other. What instantly makes a wedding picture more appealing are couples that look at each other, that smile at each other and that show off their feelings and love. And stay together during the reception! Spend time visiting friends and family together, eat together, and of course, dance with each other!

4) Avoid Boooooooooring Formals
The formals have the potential to be the most boring pictures ever. How about we make them fun and try to create uncommon pictures? The guys can stand arm-crossed and looking each one to a different side… The bridesmaids can crack up for a really natural picture. The intention is to think outside the box and get more enjoyable photos in addition to the simple “stand in a line” shot.

5) Have Fun
The first thing to put in your head is that you must have fun on your wedding day. Forget about minor problems or insignificant details. Enjoy each moment of your day. So, laugh a lot, make funny expressions and be playful. Even if the two of you need a glass or two of champagne. Don’t forget, it’s a day to really be happy and to celebrate.

When meeting with our clients to plan the photography for their wedding, a key part of the planning includes the question: Should the couple see each other before the ceremony?

Modern weddings sometimes conform to tradition, yet more couples are finding their own paths that work best for them and their guests. The bottom line is there is no one right or wrong answer to this–only the way which you feel most comfortable. That said, let’s lay out some advantages and disadvantages to seeing each other prior to your ceremony.

Advantages
There are two primary advantages to what we call First Sight. The first is that you get to, often in the presence of your photographer, enjoy a few private moments alone with your soon-to-be-spouse. As the bulk of your wedding day is often dictated by a pre-ordained schedule, this period may be the only opportunity the two of you have alone to reflect on the commitment you’re each about to make. Many clients have reported the alleviating of undue nervousness because they saw their partner first.

The second primary advantage to a First Sight is you now have the opportunity to do some portraits with the two of you, your wedding party, and perhaps even your family members prior to the ceremony. The upside to all this? You can now attend most, if not all, of your cocktail hour, mingling with your guests. This may also negate or minimize the need to visit each table during dinner, which has the added benefit of giving you and your new spouse the opportunity to actually eat your delicious meal without rushing through it.

Disadvantages
Your parents, or even your partner, may have strong feelings against doing this. Just like in any relationship, the planning of your wedding will involve some compromise, and it is up to the two of you to communicate how strongly you each feel about your position. A little give and take is a good thing here.

Some partners may feel that seeing each other prior to the ceremony can lose some of the emotional charge of proceeding down the aisle and seeing each other then. Again, if feelings are strong on this point, it may be best to leave well enough alone. But in our personal experience as well as the experience of the vast majority of our clients, this feeling remains strong throughout.

Why? With First Sight it’s a completely different feeling – it’s just the two of you – and you have the freedom to act and speak freely with each other. Whereas with the start of your ceremony, your partner is waiting for you with everyone watching, the music is playing, and there is the feeling of imminent marriage. Speaking from Bill’s personal experience, it is a completely different feeling. I never once felt a sense of loss in seeing Anne before our own celebration, and our clients have reported similar feelings.

Final Thoughts
While most of our clients who see each other do so privately, some couples will opt to have their families and/or their wedding party present to celebrate with them. This is, of course, your individual choice. In the end, your schedule as well as religious customs may also play a role in deciding to see each other. The key is to speak with your partner about his or her feelings, as well as your wedding planner and photographer to discuss logistics and what you can expect. But in the end, regardless of your choice, you’ll be married. Congratulations!
